Solar power has great potential in the desert. But don’t count out wind.
Tucson Electric Power (TEP) tapped a pocket of high winds in Deming, New Mexico for a 28-turbine wind farm that will sending power to nearby Tucson.
The 50 Megawatt project, which is online and celebrating with a ribbon cutting today, has the capacity to power 14,000 homes. That’s a relatively modest addition to the grid, but it is cost effective and helps diversify the portfolio for TEP, said David Hutchens, executive vice president of TEP and parent company, UniSource Energy Corporation.
