From Green Right Now Reports
After a random sample turned up salmonella contamination in a package of its alfalfa sprouts in mid-December, Green Valley Food Corp. of Dallas, recalled 650 cases of alfalfa sprouts. The company has now expanded that voluntary recall to include nearly 7,000 cases of “Let’s Grow Healthy Together!” Alfalfa Sprouts.
The single 5 0z. container tested positive on Dec. 12 for Salmonella, which can cause serious and even fatal infections in young children, the elderly or people with immune-suppression conditions. Salmonella poisoning typically causes diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
No confirmed illnesses, however, have been reported because of possible wider contamination of Green Valley’s sprouts. Those sprouts affected by the cautionary recall bear “use by” dates ranging from 12/22/2011 to 1/1/2012.
The sprouts being recalled include mainly alfalfa sprouts, but also some “spicy” and onion sprouts.
