From Green Right Now Reports

Come mid-January, who isn’t dreaming of a tropical vacation?

If you live north of the Tropic of Cancer, there’s a chance your daydreams are kicking up sand and surf. If that gives way to more active Internet surfing, you need to know about a new vacation rental service that will help you find green rental homes.

And we mean green, as in sustainable, not just some hotel that offers to not wash your sheets and sells Free Trade coffee (though we endorse that). We’re talking about solar-powered, LEED-certified (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), foliage-roofed homes in popular vacation spots from Taos to Thailand, the Caribbean to the Mediterranean, Vermont to California.

You can find these gems at a new service called FlipKey, which sorts its properties for a variety of constituencies. There are categories for Hipster Havens, Homes for Music Lovers and even Bare Naked Rentals near nudist beaches. Stop! That last category pictures just the houses, OK? One of them is a glass house, which seems like overkill in a nudist setting. But here, we’re interested in the green homes. So hang on to see a few below from the Eco-Friendly list.

This first one we hate to even share, ruining its best-kept secret status. It’s a sod-roofed cabin in Northern Vermont, about two hours from Montreal and close enough to Boston, if you’re coming in that way. If you’re looking for quiet and comfort away from it all, this one’s rustic, energy-efficient, non-toxic and simply adorable inside.

Another cozy getaway, this one with the balmy breezes you long for as your fingers freeze onto the steering wheel in wintry Illinois or New York, is a yummy little home in St. Croix. It’s solar-powered and outfitted with organic bedding and towels and hemp rugs. “Sun Dog House” features local owners who can serve as your guides to the area and also is super pet-friendly. Not only are yours welcomed, the owners have plans to build a no-kill animal shelter. Talk about green cred.

Beach home, St. Croix

California on your mind? This Santa Barbara home features two master suites, bamboo floors and the top Platinum LEED rating, the highest a building can achieve. Vacationers can take a five-minute walk to the beach or enjoy St. Barb’s bustling downtown. You won’t believe the interior.

FlipKey’s green options keep growing, according to spokeswoman Claire Fischer.

“We see our green inventory increasing every year, and we expect that trend to continue,” she said. “Vacation rentals are a great environmentally friendly option when compared to hotels.”
