SXSW is barely past, but it’s onward, to Earth Day Austin, set noon-7 p.m. on April 20 at 4550 Mueller Central Drive, at the old historic Browning Hangar at Mueller.

Austin Earth Day Festival 2013This year’s Earth Day festival will feature speakers such as Mayor Lee Leffingwell; Lucia Athens, Austin’s chief sustainability officer; White House advisor Sylvia Acevedo and Christy Pipkin, executive director of the Nobelity Project. Commentator Jim Hightower will speak on coal, fracking and tar sands, and Jonathan Bloom, author of American Wasteland, will address the problem of food waste.

Workshops will feature a faith collaboration on climate change, how to reduce your carbon footprint, Austin’s new bag ordinance, composting, rain barrels and building with mud. Exhibitors will include wind, solar, food, car share and recycling companies and a long list of community groups, from the Sierra Club to Be Groovy Be Green.

The family event will host activities for kids, including a petting zoo, magician Marcus Eddie and pony rides. Austin Earth Day will have a continuous soundtrack, featuring local bands, including La Mona Loca, Mingo Fishtrap, Barbara K (formerly of Tumbuk3), William Kelley, Ethan Azarian and others.

Shuttles to the site will run from Highland Mall and biking to the event is encouraged.
