Edible Austin’s Eat, Drink Local week kicks off Saturday, Dec. 6, with a Farmers Market community picnic at the Sustainable Food Center’s downtown market. The event begins at 10 a.m. The public is invited to build their picnic from local food sold at the market and then eat at cafe tents set up by a music stage.

Dan Barber, chef at Blue Hill author of Third PlateA showcase event for the week, Dec. 6-13, will be an appearance Monday, Dec. 8 at the Paramount Theatre by Chef Dan Barber, whose new book “The Third Plate” is a hot seller. Barber, the chef of Blue Hill in Manhattan and Blue Hill at Stone Barns, proposes new ways of ethical eating that take into account taste and sustainability.

Barber’s appearance also will feature musical performer Michael Fracasso. A pop-up farmers market and book signing will follow, the latter presented by BookPeople.

You can also purchase tickets to a Harvest Dinner at Palm Door on Sabine set for 6:30 p.m., Dec. 9. This event will feature a variety of seasonal, local foods and craft cocktails, wine and beer.
