Electric car supporters and companies have responded to a slap down by the Washington Post editorial board last week, which accused the Obama Administration of wasting money to help launch electric vehicles, such as GM’s Volt and Nissan’s Leaf.
The opinion piece “GM’s Vaunted Volt is on the Road to Nowhere Fast ” accused the administration both of having “paltry” goals for electric vehicles — 1 million by 2015 — and of spending too much money on subsidies for the new technology.

Texas travelers can now charge their electric vehicles at Park ‘N Fly lots serving the DFW International Airport in Dallas and George Bush International Airport in Houston.
The recharge units are part of the eVgo (ee-vee-go) network created by NRG Energy Inc.
Each of the parking lots has two EV charging units that allow eVgo subscribers to recharge while they’re traveling.

Eaton Corporation and Coulomb Technologies announced plans today to expand the North American footprint of charging stations for electric vehicles (EVs).
The partnership will connect Eaton’s quick-charging Level II and DC “Pow-R-Stations” to Coulomb’s ChargePoint® Network, which is the largest network of independently owned charging stations in the world with more than 4,500 charging locations in North America.

Many automobile industry executives believe that sales of traditional vehicles will peak before 2020 and expect electric-only vehicles (EVs) to be one of the next hot products, according to a new IBM survey of consumer attitudes and a recent study of auto industry executives. But the studies also suggest that automakers will have to address consumers’ concerns about EV performance, recharging issues and convenience factors.

Enterprise Rent-A-Car will offer electric vehicles at select rental locations in the U.S. starting in 2011, the St. Louis-based company announced today. The company will begin its EV offerings with 500 Nissan LEAFs, the first of which will be delivered in January. The company will add other electric cars to its fleet as they become available. Enterprise, which operates a network of auto rental outlets at more than 5,000 locations in the U.S., already has added about 7,000 hybrid vehicles to its fleet in recent years as it strives to be more sustainable and green-friendly.

Advanced Mechanical Products, Inc. will show its all-electric, emission-free 2010 GM Chevrolet Equinox in New York.

Auto conversion company Advanced Mechanical Products, Inc. said it will demo an all-electric, emission-free 2010 GM Chevrolet Equinox to the public at the New York Auto Show beginning April 2nd.
The company first showed its electric Equinox at the grand opening of its first showroom and U.S. production headquarters in Cincinnati in February. AMP said it has since moved into production of the AMP’d Equinox and has begun taking orders for summer 2010 delivery.
Powered by Remy International motors, AMP said its electric powertrain has a range of up to 150 miles per charge. The electric SUV can reach a speed of 90 miles an hour, and will go from zero to 60 miles per hour in approximately eight seconds with a charge voltage of either 110V or 220V, the company said.

Electric vehicle company THINK has released its first U.S. EV-Ready Cities Index. The THINK EV-Ready Cities Index takes into account purchase and usage incentives – such as HOV lane access and infrastructure support, and market fit, including hybrid sales, traffic congestion, EPA air quality zone status, and potential energy sources for vehicle recharging. The index was compiled for THINK by ASG Renaissance, a market research and business services firm located in Dearborn, Mich.

The German government hopes to get one million electric cars on the road by 2020, offering incentives for BMW and Volkswagen to get behind the push. France aims to have twice that many in operation by that same year. Carlos Ghosn, who heads up Nissan and Renault, expects 10 percent of the world’s automobiles to run on electricity before the end of the next decade.
