Singer and environmental activist Sheryl Crow is lending her support to clean diesel vehicles as an alternative to other green technologies. She is pictured above with her Mercedes-Benz R320 BlueTEC, one of a new breed of diesel vehicles that are quieter and more environmentally clean than the old diesel engines.

“The newest clean diesel vehicles are eco-friendly and deserve as much attention as other gas alternatives like hybrids,” Crow said in a statement.

The government is placing clean diesel on a par with hybrids — they are eligible for the same federal tax credit. Mercedes-Benz says current diesel tax credits for owners of a 2009 Mercedes-Benz BlueTEC are $1,800 for the GL320; $1,550 for the R320; and $900 for the ML320.

According to the EPA, the nation would save 1.4 million barrels of oil a day if just one third of all light-duty vehicles in the USA were state-of-the-art diesel vehicles. Mercedes-Benz says its BlueTEC vehicles deliver 20-30 percent higher fuel economy than a comparable gasoline engine.

In addition to Sheryl Crow, Mercedes-Benz says other celebrities driving its BlueTEC vehicles include Kim Cattrall, Billy Baldwin, Kyle MacLachlan, Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber, and Nicole Richie and Joel Madden.
