Low emissions BioLite cook stove wins Sustainable Brands award

A low-emissions wood-burning cook stove being developed by a pair of avid campers has won the top award at the Sustainable Brands 2010 conference in San Francisco.

The BioLite cookstove is a super efficient wood burning stove that cuts down on wood consumption, captures its own waste heat to drive up efficiency and reduces smoke emissions by 95 percent, according to its makers.

The BioLite, still in development and slated for sale in 2011, nearly eliminates black carbon emissions, which contribute to global warming, especially in developing nations where families rely upon wood-burning fires for cooking. It also cleans up the air inside the homes of the estimated 3 billion people worldwide who cook on wood fires, and can suffer from respiratory issues.

BioLite’s CampStove, also still in development, works similarly, allowing campers to burn wood or brush collected while off-grid. The campstove requires no natural gas, petroleum or electrical inputs, weighs under two pounds and collapses for travel. The company expects it to be available through retailers in the spring of 2011.

The BioLite stove is being developed in collaboration with Aprovecho Research Center. The team takes home a $10,000 grand prize, donated by Nike, to develop the business.

Alec Drummond, founder and CTO of Biolite LLC says the recognition will help sustain the company. “We hope SBIO award helps hasten the development of our stove.  For one thing it gets us noticed and taken seriously by organizations and funders,” he said.

Sustainable Brands 2010 hosted representatives from more than 700 companies, small and large, including name brands like Del Monte Foods, Dell, eBay, Frito Lay, Nokia, Nike, SAP, Starbucks, Target, Timberland and Unilever.

The goal of the conference is to ignite innovation around sustainable business practices and products.

“We continue to see new ideas from both entrepreneurs and global brands seeking to respond to the changing environmental context in which brands and business operate,” said Founder and CEO of Sustainable Life Media KoAnn Skrzyniarz.

Other winners in the Sustainable Brands competition included Cityscape Farms, which creates urban greenhouses that help bring food production closer to the city, and Tremont Electric, which is developed “nPower” a technology that generates electricity by harvesting kinetic energy.
