1. Find an empty tuna can. Cost: nothing.

It’s for your lawn. Whether you use sprinkler attached to a hose, or an underground system, put out the tuna can in the water stream and time how long it takes to fill up. That’s how long you should water the lawn to get a good deep watering. Then water once a week for that amount of time, but only during the dry season. (Remember to put your sprinkler on hold when it’s raining.) Watering deeply like this will encourage the grass, especially pesky grass like Bermuda, to root more deeply. The healthy grass will choke out the weeds and you can save on water and pesticides. (Later we’ll talk about getting rid of the lawn altogether, but that will cost money.)
