Growth as we know it reconsidered

August 3rd, 2011

Economists always say that the economy will get better when we can grow our GDP, or when the housing market bounces back and we’re building and selling more houses again, or people are buying more things, or trading more stocks, or taking more vacations.

Economic health always requires “more” of something.

But can we continue to grow and grow and grow our world economy?

Nothing else grows indefinitely without ultimately bursting its confines.

This video from Post Carbon Institute in San Francisco takes a look at how humans are testing the “non-negotiable limits” of the Earth’s natural resources. It’s based on Richard Heinberg’s book The End of Growth: Adapting to Our New Economic Reality.

Watch it to the bitter end. You’ll find a bit of hope.
