The group had been holding a 24/7 vigil (that may be redundant) to draw attention to the “climate silence” that has characterized the presidential campaign and some races for Congress, such as the contest between Sen. Scot Brown and challenger Elizabeth Warren.

Leading US environmentalist Bill McKibben has announced the latest action by 350.org to try to show the public that climate change is rapidly destabilizing the planet, and threatening the future of humanity.
The new worldwide action, called Connect the Dots, will take place on May 5, across the planet, with local groups expressing the urgency of climate change with demonstrations specific to their region.

Activists at 350.org hope to expose the biggest financiers of lawmakers who are stalling on climate change.

Fed up with Congress, where many members deny that climate change exists and fight measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and switch to renewable energy, 350.org is targeting those officials biggest bankroller: The U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

“For many years, everyone has assumed that if we simply manage to communicate the problem (of climate change), it will lead to action. It hasn’t, for one simple reason: there’s too much money in the way. A wall of money that separates politicians from the scientific truth that we’re in a desperate crisis,” said 350.org founder and noted environmentalist Bill McKibben said in a statement today.

Industry groups, McKibben explained, have been raising doubts about climate change, thwarting Congressional action to mitigate it, and now they’re also trying to stop the EPA from protecting the air, water and atmosphere from polluters.

‘Tis the season for giving, but what how does the environmentally-conscious shopper weave a bit of good stewardship into all that holiday generosity?

Before making a list of energy-efficient gadgets or rushing out to buy your spouse a brand new electric car, consider a little more expanded approach to gifting “green.”

For several years now, my wife has given our eco-friendly offspring (and a few friends) a donation to Heifer International. You’ve probably heard of Heifer: They’re the folks who literally provide heifers (young cows), goats, sheep, llamas, rabbits, chickens and geese – among other good chain-friendly creatures — to impoverished families, hoping to help lift them up and enable them to be more self-sufficient.

So how, you may ask, is this green?

These animals help turn dependent people into ones who can provide their own food, which is about as “sustainable” as it gets. In Heifer International’s case, that heifer is a source of milk for children and the potential to sell excess milk to pay for food, clothing and other necessities. With proper planning, the heifer can produce offspring that can help the gift keep on giving over multiple generations.

All the photos from 350.org’s global, giant art installations created in November are posted at 350.org now. So here’s one last one, one of our favorites, of an Indian elephant.

This elephant, with rising seas lapping at its feet, depicts both the literal threat of climate change and how this issue has become, to many, to be the metaphorical “elephant in the room.”

The elephant may prove particularly emblematic this week for climate activists as the annual United Nations climate talks kick off in Cancun today.

Climate action group 350.org wants us to see, really see, what’s happening as the result of climate change here on Earth.
So it’s taken to space to get a better view. Satellites began snapping photos of giant art installations, many involving humans forming pictures, last Friday and will continue through this week. The photos include one of a giant eagle in Los Angeles, created to represent the “Earth to Sky” solutions to climate change; a mural in New York City that shows how the area would look after the seas rise; a picture of a girl on a delta in Spain and a flash flood in New Mexico created by humans with blue posters.

Climate change has been a matter of debate in government circles and a talking point on news channels for many years now. But increasingly, the climate change discussion — the need to slow global warming pollution, deforestation and the loss of wildlife — is becoming a citizens’ round table.
This past weekend’s 10-10-10 work parties, rallied people of all ages, economic strata and religious beliefs who turned out in groups of 5, 10, or 100 to build gardens, promote carbon neutral transportation, plant trees and protest fossil fuels.

Thousands are expected to take actions to fight, mitigate or prepare for climate change at this weekend’s 10-10-10 Work Party organized by 350.org.
More than 7,000 events are planned in countries around the globe. They include both the highly symbolic — President Nasheed of Maldives, which stands to be annihilated by rising oceans, will kick off the weekend by helping install solar panels on his official residence — to small, meaningful neighborhood actions. Some will install gardens; others will weatherize houses, plant trees at schools or clean up natural areas. There will be work events followed by play such as concerts and picnics.

Climate action group 350.org announced today that it has logged more than 5,200 events that are planned for this year’s work party on Oct. 10, 2010.

That means the 10-10-10 work party will likely surpass participation in last year’s worldwide demonstration in which people in 181 countries turned out for 5248 events aimed at raising consciousness about climate change. CNN called that 350.org event the “most widespread day of political action in the planet’s history,” noted 350.org founder Bill McKibben.

Looking for something to do on Oct. 10, also known as 10/10/10? Take the fight against climate change into your hands with a “global work party” on that once-in-a-lifetime date. The efforts are coordinated by 350.org, an action-oriented non-profit focused on creating solutions to global warming. The group’s name is a reference to 350 parts per million of carbon dioxide, which scientists say is the safe limit in the atmosphere for humans, the group says. Right now, we’re at 390 parts per million. Not good.
