Princeton Review’s new 2012 Guide to Green Colleges commends 322 colleges for green living practices and learning opportunities, but breaks the paradigm of ranking the schools or sorting them into “best of” categories.
The Review reports that it dropped the grading system because all of the 322 schools on this year’s list — winnowed from 768 that were sent surveys — “have demonstrated a strong commitment to sustainability initiatives.”

While Congress debates comprehensive climate legislation, colleges and universities around the country have taken matters into their own hands. Schools have chosen to address sustainability with innovations, not only on each campus, but in each community and across state lines through research, green building, technological developments, travel reduction, energy efficiency and many other ways.

The University of California at San Diego is, in no way, new to the green movement. Each year they find new ways to become more eco-friendly. They give all incoming freshmen water bottles that can be filled at free filtered “hydration stations” around campus. Reusable recycling bags are given to every room in their transfer housing. University restaurants and markets use fair trade and locally grown organic foods, as well as cage-free eggs. They’ve also eliminated take-away plastics and Styrofoam. That’s a pretty impressive green resume.
But perhaps the most interesting thing though this year is their development of “EcoNauts”. When school starts later this month, there will be a few new environmental employees.

College-bound hig

Actually, the venerable environmental group was first out with the idea, launching a “Cool Schools” rundown in 2007. Their second annual review, in the group’s Sept./Oct.Sierra magazine, settles on list of the top ten campuses — Ten That Get It — that includes colleges of all sizes from the East to the West.
