2010: The heat is still on

Is is warm out there, or is it just us?
2010 brought above-average warmth, month after month. Even October, while bringing a cool breeze to most of the U.S., was warmer than most, according to the climate scientists at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

In fact, this past October was the second warmest one in the 32-year satellite climate record, says Dr. John Christy, professor of atmospheric science and director of the Earth System Science Center at The University of Alabama in Huntsville.

August was the second hottest in three decades

If last month found you with singed bare feet, and frying eggs on the backyard decking, you will find affirmation in today’s report that August 2010 was the second-hottest August, by a notch, in the last 32 years.
It fits right in with the rest of 2010, which was the second hottest on record since satellites have been used to track temperatures, according to the Earth System Science Center (ESSC) at the University of Alabama in Huntsville where scientists track temperature trends and global warming.
Is this part of the new norm? It would seem so. Even with the El Nino warming trend fading, 2010 was a scorcher. Temperatures in August were very close to those in 1998, the record hottest year of the last three decades. Back then, an El Nino Pacific Ocean “event” also played a role in the hotter temperatures.

July 2010 was the second hottest since satellite records began

July 2010 was the second hottest July in the 32-year history of charting temperatures by satellite, according to preliminary records kept by the Earth System Science Center at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
The global average temperature was only 0.03 C cooler than the record set in July 1998, said Dr. John Christy, professor of atmospheric science and director of the Earth System Science Center
