In this day and age, big corporately owned stores rule the grocery industry in America. Local shops, though, still have one advantage: They can form closer relationships with their customers and offer specialty products, like organic produce, artisan breads and non-industrial meat.

A growing number of consumers are putting their food dollars into Fair Trade products that support an equitable wage for global producers.
Fair Trade USA, the leading certifier of Fair Trade products in the U.S., reports that sales increased 24 percent, rising to $170 million during 2010.
The increase was strong at the traditional natural grocers (a 16 percent year over year increase) and specialty stores (22 percent) where consumers have typically found Fair Trade products. But it was strongest at mainstream stores (26 percent), according to a survey by the SPINS consulting service on behalf of Fair Trade USA.

Since the Obama Administration approved the unregulated planting of genetically engineered alfalfa (and sugar beets) last month, the organic community has been organizing against the deregulation.
Organic farmers and food producers fear for their very livelihood — and for the integrity of the organic food supply, because GE (or GM, genetically modified) alfalfa could cross-pollinate with nearby organic crops, causing them to lose their purity and their ability to be organically certified.
