Why hasn’t this model caught on around the globe? Surely it’s not that cities are squeamish about allowing advertisers to paste their pitches on public property. From stadiums to subway stations, lunchrooms to landmark bridges, practically all structures are available for rent if the price is high enough or the cause sufficiently worthy.
And it isn’t as if there has been a public backlash. Toronto’s program has been so successful that it’s doubling in size next year. Thanks to a change in regulations controlling litter-bin ads and those on bus shelters, a new company won the contract and will bring the total number of boxes to ten thousand, with many of the new bins integrated into the stands where commuters wait for the bus. It may not be acceptable yet to carry an armful of empty jars and food containers along on the ride home from work, but at least Toronto’s citizens can dispose of them responsibly before starting the commute.
