In the same press conference, President Clinton drove home the importance of civic involvement in the green movement: “Buildings in large cities account for more than 40 percent of all energy consumed, and the steps being taken in Chicago could reduce that energy consumption by 20 to 50 percent,” Clinton said.
So it seems the City of Big Shoulders has undertaken a massive green overhaul. And even if Portland and Seattle have it “beat” for now, few should doubt the determination of a city that has rebuilt and redefined itself many times, all the while demonstrating to the world what American architecture and design is all about.
