Green Dilemmas Of The Season

December 5th, 2007

Like many families, we like to include a photo of the kids in our cards. So after a cantankerous photo session over the Thanksgiving weekend (why do we have to do this every year? I don’t want to wear THAT for the photo), we got the shot. What’s next?

hallmark-ecard.jpgI first went to our local CVS where there was a large selection of photo greeting cards. After inserting the digital camera’s memory card into the pharmacy’s machine, I was able to find a greeting that worked with our image. It took no time to download and make a dozen copies. I also discovered I could do the same thing online. The cost was reasonable: 19 cents per card. The only problem – the photo paper used is not recycled. However, it could be argued that if your Christmas card recipients recycle or put their cards in an album, then the photo cards are being reused or at least, repurposed.

I also went online to the Gallery Collection where I found a holiday greeting site that incorporates recycled paper. It was not cheap or fast, $91 for 25 photo cards and about a week for delivery!

Target Online offers nine styles of cards on 100 percent post consumer recycled paper — ie., primarily recycled office and computer paper that has been is chlorine and acid-free. The 4-by-6-inch cards are not photo cards, but are blank inside. They are designed by Ane Susanto and made in the United States. The cards come 10 per box and retail for $10.

Then I checked out Hallmark’s online site. Here you can design an e-mail holiday greeting card that incorporates the kids’ picture, add your own message, complete with music for $2. Once you purchase the original design, you own it and can send to as many email addresses as you like. An added benefit is that you can print the card for those on your list who may not be e-mail savvy or who just prefer a hard copy photo, such as grandma and grandpa.
