A Green, Low-Litter Picnic

May 23rd, 2008

Treecycle sells 100 percent recycled paper napkins and paper towels, if you don’t mind ordering in bulk — which you might want to consider if you’re interested in reducing the heavy carbon imprint of your purchase that transportation imposes.

Leaven your imprint further by using a bamboo board for slicing bread or cheese. (Plastic boards have been shown to retain more germs anyway.) Try this one at Greenfeet from organically grown bamboo.

Pack your meals beforehand in environmentally sensitive ways. These handy sandwich wrapables are an eco-friendly alternative to disposable plastic bags. The convenient and easy-to-clean wrappers unfold into place mats, which can be useful at picnics.

Bring reusable water bottles to cut down on waste such as disposable cans and bottles. SIGG sells a series of durable, aluminum water bottles that won’t leach harmful plastic additives. They’re available at many online outlets and in natural food markets.

  • Which brings us to the food:

Start with a trip to your local farmer’s market to stock up on fruits and vegetables. That will help cut down on processed and packaged foods.

If you are a meat eater, consider making that a smaller part of the meal. Meat, especially beef has a high carbon imprint. Because it is higher on the food chain, it consumes far more feed and water per calorie than grains, vegetables and fruit.

Grilled vegetables are a great alternative. If meat is a must-have, go with fresh and organic when possible. Grass-fed beef, for instance, is raised on nature’s pasture lands instead of being speed-fed on grains in feed lots. Healthier for you and the planet.
