At their annual meeting, the NGA said governors should lead by example, noting that the following types of actions were good examples of how governors could take the green initiative:
- Procure energy efficient appliances and equipment for public functions.
- Establish energy efficient performance standards for new and existing buildings
- Purchase clean energy for public facilities or increase the use of onsite generation from renewable energy systems
- Implement green fleets programs by setting alternative fuel standards for state government vehicles
- Setting overall GHG emissions reduction targets for state operations
