Color me natural: The search for good organic cosmetics

February 4th, 2009

“Additionally, many natural cosmetics just don’t have the same staying power women need. Lesser ingredients may not be natural, but they keep our face shine-free for hours; versus a natural product that may require more touch ups throughout the day. Again, a hard sell to the woman on the go,” she said.

About Face: Ditch Chemical Cosmetics and Go Natural

What natural, organic makeup lines are considered the best?

You can find lists of recommended products at green beauty and style sites such as Sprig.com, Future Natural, Spirit Beauty Lounge, Green My Style (you can find what product celebs love there) and The Mean Green Beauty Machine.

Minerals, the hot commodity in organic makeup circles, and a list of recommended product lines from Natural Solutions Magazine suggests specific products for various skin types. They also list companies they consider the best when it comes to natural body products.

Berg mentioned makeup from Dr. Hauschka, Suki Color, Jane Iredale, Australia’s NVEY Eco, Afterglow, RMS Beauty (a new small line launched by makeup artist Rosemary Swift) and Lovera (from Europe). Kane says she loves what Aveda is doing in searching for natural preservatives, that Cargo has a superb line, and Valan Minerals is the independent organic makeup for women of color.

Our brief search for natural makeup recommendations found these product lines popping up most often:

Dr. Hauschka, a pricey, natural line of skin care products (since 1967) that now has a line of makeup.

Suki Color is also a high quality, not inexpensive line of skin and hair products, and now makeup. They have a page of ingredients to watch out for in makeup and body products, also.

Jane Iredale bills itself as the “skin care makeup” and her products are all mineral-based. Her products are only sold in a few online locations and in select spas and retail stores.

Other recommended products include: NVEY Eco, Alima Pure (mineral-based makeup products), AfterGlow and Logona, both based in the U.K. and Physicians Formula Organic Wear, the first mass market brand to receive Ecocert certification in the U.S.
