Ten ways to celebrate Earth Day with (or without) kids

April 15th, 2009

10 – Interact with other young greenies

You can find green buddies at the schoolyard garden, and also online. Share the enthusiasm. Start a club. One kid who can help you with that is Riley Hoffer, an Arkansas 12-year-old who started her own green website to chat with and inspire other kids ages 7 – 15. Check her out at CG Kidz.com.

Riley has plowed a lot of green turf in the last year, appearing at schools to speak about taking environmental action and starting her online Eco-Club. Riley’s website offers a “Green Club in a Box” — a starter kit with school project ideas, recycled paper notebooks and parental pledge cards. At her school in Little Rock, they’re planting trees, creating a giant wall mural and handing out CG Kidz reusable water bottles for Earth Day.

Riley is lucky to have an inside track on supplies — her parents Joe and Danelle Hoffer run CynerGreen, which advises groups on how to green their events and lines them up with branded reusable steel water bottles. Danelle noticed long ago that meetings and conventions tore through too many plastic bottles and vowed to do something about it. So the Hoffers are keeping it green, and in the family.
