9 – Plant shrubs and flowers
You’ll want shrubs and flowers for your veggie garden, for beautification, pest and erosion control, and for attracting “good bugs” to your reflection or veggie garden. Get free plants — yes we said free – from the unique venture Free Trees and Plants.com, which recycles discarded plants from growers and nurseries.
This doubly green recycling venture based in Lincoln, Neb., helps recover plants that nurseries and growers have given up on and it also employs people with disabilities to package and mail out the orders. As the owners of this unusual non-profit say in their news release “there is such a thing as a free bunch” – of flowers that is.
Free Trees and Plants, which started in 2004, handles millions of unsold plants that would otherwise be destroyed. Consumers simply pay for processing and shipping.
“With the spring planting season fast approaching, we’re thrilled to add a number of perennial plugs to our ever growing collection of trees, shrubs and plants,” says Cheryl Richter, a garden writer and photographer who created the program with her husband Greg, in a news release. “Gardeners from across the country may reserve any of the more than ninety varieties of perennials, shrubs and trees featured this spring.”
The organization is a non profit, but does not take donations. “We are believers in direct action and social responsibility,” says Greg Richter.
Lessons for children abound here – they can learn about recycling, reusing and respect for the natural and human environment. They’ll get a kick out of getting something for less cost. Not to mention this is one frugal way to trim a landscape during uncertain times.
