Teachers, tell your kids about the rainforest and a poster contest for Earth Day

April 7th, 2011

From Green Right Now Reports

Earth Day is fast approaching, but it’s not too late for kids in grades K-6 to enter a contest aimed at raising awareness about the loss of rainforests.

Tiki the Tiger, a mascot for the story of the rainforest.

The contest by the Rainforest Action Network comes with a teaching module about Tiki the Tiger, who’s losing his home to rainforest destruction, as well as instructions for kids who want to enter the poster contest.

It’s true that rainforests are being destroyed by multi-national companies to obtain palm oil and lumber. So the lesson may come as a hard one to youngsters just learning that books and healthy snacks are good (except when they use paper and palm oil from rainforests).

But teachers who want to teach environmentalism in this Earth Day month will find the story of Tiki and the lesson around him to be quite straightforward. Keep cutting the forests. No more Tiki.
