Chicago Green Festival is set for Navy Pier May 22-23

The two-day event will feature more than 350 local and national green businesses, and 150 speakers at panel discussions and how-to workshops. It will include a Fair Trade, Green Home and Organic Food and Gardening pavilions as well as eco-kids activities and green refreshments such as organic beer, wine and food.

Attendees can hear about everything from choosing recycled paper to building a greener investment portfolio; from getting the toxics out of the house to putting beneficial microbes back into the soil.

Some highlights:

  • A demonstration of a Certified Organic Rooftop Farm, owned by the restaurant Uncommon Ground, with a presentation by co-owner Helen Cameron. The urban farm, constructed on a 2500 square foot deck of recycled composite material, includes 28 cedar and steel planter boxes that are bordered by five solar thermal panels to heat water.
  • A showing of the documentary 2012: Time for Change, directed by Emmy Award nominee João Amorim. The documentary follows journalist Daniel Pinchbeck as he explores an optimistic approach to the year 2012, incorporating the wisdom of ancient cultures with modern technology advances.
  • Dr. Alan Greene, author of Raising Baby Green, will discuss how food habits affect our future.
  • Ambassador Carol Moseley Brown will talk about her company Ambassador Organics, a coffee, tea and spice supplier that sources organic, biodynamic and Fair Trade products.
  • Naomi Davis, founder of Blacks in Green (BIG) and a fellow with Green For All, will speak on green jobs
  • Dr. Kevin Denaher, a founder of Global Exchange, TransFairUSA and the Green Festivals (Chicago is just one; Green Festivals also hosts events in Seattle, San Francisco and Washington D.C.) also will speak on green careers.

The fair is a project of Global Exchange and Green America. Visitors can see a guide to the festival online.
