Utah House Passes Guest Worker Bill

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – A bill to allow Utah companies to legally hire immigrants from Mexico as guest workers on a contract basis has won unanimous House approval.

Republican Rep. Stephen Sandstrom says House Bill 466 passed Friday would help alleviate the state's illegal immigration woes by allowing immigrants to enter the state on a two-year work contract.

It now moves to the Senate.

The bill would let Utah businesses solicit employees through Nuevo Leon in Mexico.

The measure doesn't address the more than 100,000 illegal immigrants already in Utah.

But Sandstrom says it addresses the main reason they come to the state – to work.
