NFL Scores Green Initiatives For Super Bowl

“Any material that does not get used, will be warehoused and then given to nonprofits,” he says. “For example, Super Bowl flags might be auctioned off for a good cause. It doesn’t end up on some executive’s desk.”

They also work with local food banks to distribute unused food. “This is food that hasn’t left the kitchen and is kept at the correct temperature,” Groh says. “Last year we distributed about 60,000 pounds of food in Miami, which translated to meals for about 55,000 people.”

“Another way the extra food can help,” says Groh, “is by allowing the food banks to use our food and free up their money for needed items such as a new stove or refrigerated truck.”

The NFL’s efforts have not gone unnoticed by environmental groups. Treehugger.com has said: “These efforts in conjunction with souvenir recycling and the donating of uneaten food make the Super Bowl a welcome addition to the list of major sporting events that are working to minimize their environmental impacts.”

Raya Widenoja, a research associate who specializes in biofuels for the Worldwatch Institute adds that for the offsets to be really useful, the NFL should not be planting just any tree, but recreating the kind of forest that would grow there naturally.
