Houston-based Continental Airlines today announced a major increase in the amount of waste being recovered in its recycling programs following the company's decision to put special emphasis on recycling projects.

As the United States prepares to observe "America Recycles Day" on Sunday, Continental said that so far in 2009, it has collected more than 4 million pounds of mixed recyclables from terminal operations at its Houston Bush Intercontinental, New York/Newark Liberty and Cleveland Hopkins hubs - an 800 percent year-over-year increase. Mixed recyclables include newspapers, cans, and plastic bottles contributed by co-workers and customers via designated "EcoSkies" recycling bins in hub airport terminals.]]></description>

<p>Houston-based Continental Airlines today announced a major increase in the amount of waste being recovered in its recycling programs following the company&#8217;s decision to put special emphasis on recycling projects.</p>
<p>As the United States prepares to observe &#8220;America Recycles Day&#8221; on Sunday, Continental said that so far in 2009, it has collected more than 4 million pounds of mixed recyclables from terminal operations at its Houston Bush Intercontinental, New York/Newark Liberty and Cleveland Hopkins hubs &#8211; an 800 percent year-over-year increase. Mixed recyclables include newspapers, cans, and plastic bottles contributed by co-workers and customers via designated &#8220;EcoSkies&#8221; recycling bins in hub airport terminals.<br />

&#8220;While Continental has had a robust recycling program for more than a decade, we have made substantial enhancements to the program throughout 2008 and 2009, increasing recycling onboard our aircraft, at our airport terminals and at other supporting facilities, like our food service kitchens,&#8221; Leah Raney, Continental&#8217;s managing director of global environmental affairs, said in a statement. &#8220;We have had strong encouragement and support from our co-workers and customers, and we are excited to see such great results from our expanded recycling program.&#8221;</p>
<p>In 2008, Continental&#8217;s expanded inflight and flight kitchen recycling efforts resulted in the recovery of more than 462 tons pounds of plastic and aluminum, and more than 1,300 tons of cardboard. So far in 2009, Continental has more than doubled that amount, recovering more than 1,500 tons of plastic and aluminum, and more than 30,000 tons of cardboard.</p>
<p>Continental also works with contract caterers at the non-hub airports it serves to encourage recycling; today, more than 91 percent of Continental&#8217;s domestic caterers and more than 87 percent of its international caterers recycle.</p>
<p>Due to Continental&#8217;s focus on increasing its recycling efforts in 2009 alone, Continental has:</p>
<ul>
<li>Recycled enough aluminum to build 20 Boeing 777 airplanes</li>
<li>Saved more than 584,300 trees</li>
<li>Saved enough water to meet the monthly freshwater needs of 106,900 homes</li>
<li>Saved enough energy to heat and cool more than 49,600 homes</li>
<li>Reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 35,208 metric tons</li>
<li>Reduced carbon footprint to landfills by saving 116,900 cubic yards of waste</li>
</ul>
<p>Continental said proceeds from its recycling program are re-invested in the program or donated to We Care, a nonprofit charity organization that provides financial assistance to Continental employees in need.</p>

<p>The stations will be the first of many envisioned for the I-80 corridor through Iowa and Nebraska. They are the first installed in Iowa, and the first between Chicago and Denver, helping add to a network that aims to span the country – which helps answer the question “Why Iowa?”</p>
<p>Another way of looking at it, according to President and CEO of Iron Eagle Technologies (IET), Mike Howard, is to ask “Why Not Iowa?”</p>
<p>“Although it’s not well known, the first successful electric vehicle was actually invented in Iowa by William Morrison.  We’ve come a long way since then, and Iron Eagle Technologies is committed to putting the EV focus back in the heartland,” he said.</p>
<p>IET, a testing company that consults, evaluates and helps develop clean energy, including EV vehicles, wind and solar energy, provided the impetus for bringing the stations to the southwest corner of Iowa. The company’s “World EVAL” program will be testing and certifying electric vehicles and EV components.</p>
<p>The new ChargePoint Networked Charging Stations will be open to all drivers of plug-in vehicles. The networked repowering stations provide authentication, management and real-time control using web-based portals that drivers and fleet managers can use. <p>The ribbon cutting ceremony, at the town&#8217;s iconic (and fittingly green) Danish Windmill, will be a celebration of possibilities with officials speaking about the need to put EV infrastructure in place for future transportation and EV manufacturers offering rides in EV vehicles.</p>

<p>LG Electronics USA,  a leading provider of flat-panel HDTVs to the lodging industry, said it will partner with Waste Management Inc. on the first recycling program for hotel operators to responsibly dispose of outdated television sets and computer monitors.</p>
<p>In 2010 alone, hundreds of hotels are expected to upgrade thousands of rooms with energy-efficient flat-panel digital TVs, which will displace older analog picture tube TVs. To support this growing trend, LG Electronics said it will offer environmentally conscious hotel, motel and resort operators a convenient, cost-effective opportunity for recycling the obsolete hotel TVs.</p>
<p>Under this new program planned for launch in 2010, LG Electronics would facilitate the recycling process through Waste Management&#8217;s subsidiary WM Recycle America LLC. In addition to offering the TV and monitor-recycling program, LG would assist hoteliers in working with WM to recycle the packaging from any new LG flat-panel HDTVs and computer monitors being installed in their properties.</p>
<p>The executive director of the National Center for Electronics Recycling, Jason Linnell, called the program &#8220;a significant new development&#8221; in the e-waste arena. &#8220;Most voluntary and state-mandated efforts across the country have been focused on consumer recycling efforts,&#8221; he said in a statement. &#8220;So, when you think of the millions of analog TVs being replaced in hotels across the country, this approach is particularly noteworthy. We urge hotel operators to take advantage of these kinds of opportunities.&#8221;</p>
<p>The program will leverage Waste Management&#8217;s national network of over 200 recycling centers throughout the United States. The hotel TVs and computer monitors collected under this program will be processed in an environmentally responsible manner at one of four regionally designated Waste Management recycling facilities that are ISO 14001 and 9001 certified to protect the local environment in those communities along with the people handling this waste.</p>

<p>“The Gucci Group’s actions and commitments confirm its place as an industry leader,” Lafcadio Cortesi, RAN’s Forest Campaign Director, said in a statement. “This move sets a bar for others in fashion and retail and demonstrates the foresight our society needs for our children and grandchildren to have standing rainforests and a stable climate.”</p>
<p>The Gucci Group’s move commits some of fashion’s most famous brands, including Yves Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney and Balenciaga to perhaps the luxury industry’s strongest paper policy. With its new policy, the Gucci Group has pledged to reduce the amount of paper it uses, eliminate fiber from high conservation value forests, and only to purchase recycled products or those certified by the Forest Stewardship Council by December 2010. With this policy, they are ensuring that all paper categories used by the group, from copy paper to shopping bags, do not come from endangered forests such as those in Indonesia.</p>
<p>Gucci Group’s new policy puts them at the front of a growing list of major companies, including Tiffany &amp; Co., H&amp;M Group, Staples and Unisource who acting to clean their supply chains of rainforest paper and severing relationships with companies who continue to destroy rainforests in Indonesia or elsewhere.</p>
<p>“Standing rainforests are not a luxury, they’re a necessity if the world wants to stop climate change,” Mimma Viglezio, Executive VP Global Communications at the Group, said in a statement. “Our actions are lowering our own carbon footprint, but we hope that they will also raise awareness inside the fashion industry that it’s possible for our industry to make a difference for rainforests and for the climate.”</p>
<p>Worldwide, the degradation and destruction of tropical rainforests is responsible for 20 percent of all annual greenhouse emissions. The carbon emissions resulting from Indonesia’s rapid deforestation account for around eight percent of global emissions &#8212; more than the combined emissions from all the cars, planes, trucks, buses and trains in United States. This huge carbon footprint from forest destruction has made non-industrialized Indonesia the third-largest global greenhouse gas emitter, behind only the U.S. and China.</p>

The rapid clearing of tropical forests accounts for nearly 20 percent of the planet’s greenhouse gas emissions (partly due to trees being burned) &#8212; more than all transportation vehicles combined.</p>
<p>Increasingly, though, companies and non-profits are trying to stem the loss of woodlands to curb global warming and save habitat and native economies.</p>
<p>On Tuesday, <a href=" http://corporate.disney.go.com/" target="_blank">The Walt Disney Company</a> announced it will invest $7 million to save and restore forests in the Amazon, the Congo and the United States.</p>
<p>The projects aim to fight climate change, improve the quality of life in local communities and save jeopardized wildlife from gorillas in Africa to songbirds in North America.</p>
<p>“Disney has always been a conservation leader,” said Disney President and CEO Robert A. Iger, in a statement. “Now, more than ever, it’s essential to take swift action to preserve our most vulnerable natural environments for future generations and to be innovative in achieving that goal.”</p>

<h3><strong>Rainforest Management in the Congo and the Amazon</strong></h3>
<p>Disney is giving $4 million to increase protection of forests in the Tayna and Kisimba-Ikobo Community Reserves in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Alto Mayo conservation project in Peru, two vital tropical forest regions.</p>
<p>The programs, managed by <a href="http://www.conservation.org/Pages/default.aspx" target="_blank">Conservation International</a>, will help secure watersheds and save habitat for plants and animals, many of them threatened or endangered, including the gorilla and okapi in the Congo and the Andean spectacled bear and yellow-tailed woolly monkey in Peru.</p>
<p>The majority of Disney’s contribution will finance community management of these forests, help expand sustainable livelihood practices among local villages and provide for an analysis of the carbon-saving aspect of the project.</p>
<p>Both of these tropical forest efforts are expected to decrease carbon emissions by stopping slash and burn agriculture and to benefit local communities economically. CI estimates that Disney&#8217;s expenditure will prevent 900,000 tons of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere over the next five years.</p>

<p>“This commitment by Disney represents the largest single corporate contribution ever made to reduce emissions from deforestation and will help build confidence in these activities that generate such compelling climate, local community and biodiversity benefits,” said Peter Seligmann, CEO and Chairman of Conservation International.</p>
<p><strong>Reforestation in the Lower Mississippi Valley</strong></p>
<p><strong> </strong>Disney also is partnering with <a href=" http://www.nature.org/" target="_blank">The Nature Conservancy</a> to provide more than $2 million to support a pilot reforestation project in the Lower Mississippi Valley.</p>

<p>Working with private landowners in Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas, The Nature Conservancy expects to restore up to 2,000 acres of former forest land, planting trees in permanent easements to assure their longevity.</p>
<p>The reforestation will help alleviate carbon pollution and also expand the North American habitat of migrating songbirds and the black bear.</p>
<p>“Protecting forests is one of our most powerful tools in the fight against climate change,” said Mark Tercek, President and CEO of The Nature Conservancy, in a news release. “This innovative project will give private landowners the support they need to join the global fight against climate change and restore local habitats for the betterment of both people and nature. We are proud to partner with Disney to protect critical habitat and ensure these incredible forests will be around for generations to come.”</p>
<p><strong>Redwood Forest Management in Northern California</strong></p>
<p>Disney also will invest $1 million in <a href=" http://www.conservationfund.org/" target="_blank">The Conservation Fund’s</a> forestry work along California’s North Coast, where the group owns and sustainably manages two redwood forests in Mendocino County.<br />
The project was set up to demonstrate that improved forest management, with selective harvests and verified carbon offset sales, can benefit the environment and the economy. Indeed, here in an area rich in natural resources, the well-being of humans, plants and animals are closely entwined: Healthy forests, watersheds and streams are needed to support Coho salmon, steelhead trout, spotted owl and other wildlife &#8212; and the people</p>

<p>Lawrence Selzer, president and CEO of The Conservation Fund, joined the other environmental leaders in issuing a statement of gratitude for the Disney gift:</p>
<p>“Across America, forests are shrinking; 35 acres here, 500 there,” Selzer said. “The decline is so incremental, it masks a crisis. In partnership with leading companies such as Disney, we are pioneering new approaches to forest conservation and climate change. We’re proud to collaborate with Disney on this critical effort.”</p>
<p>Disney’s forest preservation investment is part of the company’s plan, announced last March, to meet aggressive 3 to 5 year goals to reduce emissions, waste, electricity and water use, and to limit its impact on ecosystems.</p>
<p>In addition to the investment announced today, Disney has recently committed to planting close to 3 million trees in Brazil’s Atlantic Rainforest and in the fire-ravaged areas in the mountains surrounding greater Los Angeles through contributions from the  <a href=" http://www.disneycruisenews.com/HTMLContent.aspx?PageId=a54d529d-b42f-405c-8a05-4cf9abee7e08" target="_blank">Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund</a> and local donations.</p>

Kimpton Hotels and Restaurants realized early on that green grows like that.  The hospitality chain, with roots in San Francisco, has a history of putting eco-friendly ideas in place. Even before green hotel or green restaurant designations were developed, Kimpton was experimenting with eco-friendly practices at its San Francisco properties, such as the Hotel Triton, where motion sensors turn off lights and 60 percent of the waste gets recycled.

<p><a href=" http://www.kimptonhotels.com/index.aspx" target="_blank">Kimpton Hotels and Restaurants</a> realized early on that green grows like that.  The hospitality chain, with roots in San Francisco, has a history of putting eco-friendly ideas in place. Even before green hotel or green restaurant designations were developed, Kimpton was experimenting with eco-friendly practices at its San Francisco properties, such as the <a href=" http://www.hoteltriton.com/html/green-hotel.html" target="_blank">Hotel Triton</a>, where motion sensors turn off lights and 60 percent of the waste gets recycled.</p>
<p>Non-toxic products, green cleaners, low VOC paints, low-flow faucets – all these turned up in Kimpton Hotels while other hotels were still on the highway of high-consumption. In addition, Kimpton has restored several historic buildings, supporting pedestrian-friendly urban areas. Stay at a Kimpton and you may find yourself ensconced on an eco-friendly mattress, drinking organic coffee and munching on a Clif bar.</p>
<p>Still, as the Kimpton chain grew greener, it had to figure out how to roll out the plan to all of its properties, including those outside of the Bay Area where environmental practices were not as well understood.</p>
<p>By 2005, the luxury hotel group had decided to standardize its green practices, requiring all Kimptons to adhere to an “Earth Care” program. But it didn’t want to impose a rigid top-down program. The solution: Kimpton named “eco-champions” at each of its hotels and encouraged them to form green teams and let ideas bubble up.</p>
<p>“You’ve got to get people on the front lines, who are doing the work, whose job you’re changing, a voice…and they’re right there, they see where the waste is,” said Niki Leondakis , chief operation officer for Kimpton Hotels and Restaurants.</p>
<p>The Kimpton leadership, which currently oversees 48 hotels in cities from New England to California, learned the importance of buy-in earlier. In 2003, when Kimpton decided guests could opt out of having their sheets and towels washed every day, management was surprised that many housekeepers were reluctant to make the change. “The housekeepers couldn’t grasp the idea that they were doing a good job by not changing the towels. They needed training that if the towels were on towel bar, the guest wanted to save water and soap…and it was OK,” Leondakis said.</p>
<p>Today, the staff is more likely to get it, though the hospitality group still treads carefully in determining what <em>clients </em>will tolerate – and remain satisfied customers. That has left several green issues still on the table, such as whether a hotel can reduce plastic water bottles when guests on-the-go seem to expect that perk, or whether guests will accept room amenities in bulk dispensers (foregoing that little souvenir of the trip).</p>
<p>“We were initially, like, ‘We’re going to get rid of bottled water entirely.&#8217; And we’d offer filtered tap water in reusable containers both in the restaurants, and our vision was to create a reusable container almost like a flask that people paid a nominal fee for and then they’d refill it at a water cooler. But the consumer does not seem to be ready for that,” Leondakis said.</p>
<p>Look for the green teams and “eco-champions” to find a solution. So far, the local crews are forging viable new ways on various fronts.</p>
<p>In DC, Chef Robert Weland at the <a href=" http://www.postebrasserie.com/" target="_blank">Post Modern Barasserie</a> in D.C. was the driving force behind an herb garden. He not only uses it in his dishes, but gives tours.</p>
<p>In Portland, at the Hotel Monaco, someone decided the facility could get along without those paper-wasting phone books. Now all Kimptons get by without guest room phone books.</p>

<p>In Chicago, the cities&#8217; three Kimpton Hotels, the Monaco, Burnham and Allegro became leaders in the Green Seal green cleaner certification program, prompted by a mayor&#8217;s green initiative. Now the three are among just 50 Green Seal certified hotels nationwide.</p>
<p>The 20-year-old program requires the use of green cleaners, energy efficiency and recycling. (For details, see this <a href=" http://www.monaco-chicago.com/green-seal-silver-certified.html" target="_blank">listing</a>.)</p>
<p>Using green cleaners prevents water pollution, provides for healthier interior air and curbs carbon emissions. The typical silver-ranked Green Seal hotel saves 400 tons of CO2 emissions every year, said Charlotte Teyraud, a spokeswoman for the non-profit <a href=" http://www.greenseal.org/" target="_blank">Green Seal</a>.</p>
<p>The Chicago hotels also  advocated for a commercial recycling program, that was eventually put into place with the help of city hall, says Nabil Moubayed, manager of the 192-room <a href=" http://www.monaco-chicago.com/" target="_blank">Hotel Monaco Chicago</a> along the city&#8217;s Magnificent Mile:</p>
<p>Now in the “5<sup>th</sup> phase” of instituting the Kimpton &#8220;Earth Care&#8221; program, Moubayed says the Hotel Monaco has found that <a href=" http://www.monaco-chicago.com/green-hotel.html" target="_blank">going green is working</a> on many levels:</p>
<ul>
<li> About 60-70 percent of the hotel&#8217;s customers use the opt-out linen/towel program, saving money and water.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>The Green Seal-approved cleaners, which the hotel buys in bulk, concentrated form, are saving the hotel about $25,000 a year. The non-toxic cleaners are healthier for staff and guests and biodegradable. (As for that outdated worry about green cleaners not working – Moubayad says surveys burst that myth. “When we look at guest comments. We have the highest score in the company for clean bathrooms and guest rooms.”)</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>The hotel recycles about half of its trash, which also saves money because sending out the garbage costs more in trash fees than sending out recyclables, even in this down-market for recyclable material.</li>

<p>Green ways are catching on among staff, he says. When Monaco’s valet crew discovered that the dry cleaners they were using was discarding hangers after one use, they were aghast. They went to work to find a solution. Now the hangers are reused.</p>
<p>Guests, too, are contracting the green bug. While they remain a diverse group that’s not easily gauged, Moubayed says surveys show that the majority of people stay at Kimpton because of the hotels&#8217; greener rep.</p>
<p>“We’ve seen a pretty high percentage of guests choosing use because we have a strong Green Care program.” he  said. “We don’t want them to feel like everything we doing is in their face. The (guest room) recycling bin for instance is bronze not bright blue. And the low flow shower heads, we don’t’ necessarily want them to notice that, but it  is helping the environment.”</p>
<p>Moubayad had no special sustainability training before coming to the Hotel Monaco, but he has built on what he has learned through Kimpton.</p>
<p>“I found I had a passion for it,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It’s the right thing to do., not just from the consumer point of view, but as a human, for the future generations. It’s the right thing to do.”<br />

<p>&#8220;Kimberly-Clark is already making significant strides in reducing packaging waste from its products, but this program with TerraCycle will help us do even more,&#8221; Matt Kolton, brand manager of Scott Naturals, said in a statement. &#8220;No longer will all the plastic packaging from both our Scott brand bath tissue, towels, napkins and moist wipes, and Huggies brand diapers be considered waste. Rather, it can be used as a resource in a new generation of products.</p>
<p>Schools, business, houses of worship and even individuals can <a href="http://www.terracycle.net/brigades" target="_blank">set up a &#8220;Brigade&#8221; to collect packaging</a>.  For each piece of packaging a Brigade participant collects, two cents is paid to a school or non-profit group of their choice.</p>
<p>Each of these Brigade programs is diverting product packaging waste from landfills, giving much needed funding to local communities and helping to raise consumer awareness about reusing and reducing.</p>

<p>Currently, islanders pay 25 to 55 cents, per kilowatt hour for electricity &#8211; three to five times the national average. Gas prices are the highest in the country.</p>
<p>As solar-tech pioneer and Honolulu-based <a href=" http://www.sopogy.com/ " target="_blank">Sopogy</a> founder Darren Kimura puts it, &#8220;We only have about 5 to 7 days worth of energy stored here. And if we were cut off, we&#8217;d be stuck. Tourists would be stranded, transportation would stop, food would run out. &#8230; We have a very small grid here, and power outages aren&#8217;t uncommon.&#8221;</p>
<p>Kimura, who just won the Blue Planet Foundation&#8217;s Honua (meaning &#8220;Earth&#8221;) <a href=" http://sopogy.com/blog/2009/10/24/president-and-ceo-of-sopogy-receives-the-honua-award/" target="_blank">Award for Clean Energy</a>,    illustrates his point with a lighter note: &#8220;Last year in December, President Obama was out here on vacation, and we had a minor incident and lost power to the entire island. Talk about being at center stage and the lights going off. The President&#8217;s visiting and at the house where he&#8217;s staying, the power goes out. &#8230; The unfortunate reality was (driven home) &#8211; how fragile the energy grid is here.&#8221;</p>
<p>Fortunately, America&#8217;s 44th Commander-in-Chief was born and partly raised in Honolulu; he&#8217;s probably used to the outages. Kimura guesses it didn&#8217;t freak him out too badly.</p>
<p>But there&#8217;s been plenty for Hawaiians to ballyhoo in the news lately, besides &#8216;ownership&#8217; of a President: In January 2008, during her State of the State address, Gov. Linda Lingle told constituents she would make energy a priority. Within a few days, Honolulu had signed the historic Clean Energy Initiative with the U.S. Department of Energy (DoE), whereby America&#8217;s 50th state would shift from a fossil-fuel driven economy to one that buzzed with power from wind, sun, water (and biofuel and geothermal tech and hydrogen fuel&#8230;) by 2030. Specifically, the plan calls for Hawaii to get 70 percent of of its power from clean energy &#8211; 40 percent from actual renewable power, 30 percent from energy efficiency and consumer conservation.</p>
<p>Since then, several other major policy changes have occurred.</p>
<ul>
<li>Last year, the state passed a law requiring all new homes to have solar-heated water. Jeff Mikulina, executive director of Hawaii&#8217;s influential <a href=" http://blueplanetfoundation.org/index.php" target="_blank">Blue Planet Foundation (started by Blue Planet Software founder Henk Rogers)</a> does the energy math: &#8220;We&#8217;re building about 5,000 homes a year in Hawaii, and most experts say the measure will save four or five barrels of oil, per household per year,&#8221; Mikulina says. So&#8230;that&#8217;s 20,000 to 25,000 barrels per year that we won&#8217;t consume.&#8221;</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>In December 2008, California-based Better Place, an alt-energy outfit, announced it would use Hawaii as a test site in setting up an infrastructure for electric cars (Israel, Denmark, Australia and California are other test sites). The plan, agreed to by Hawaii&#8217;s utility service, calls for Better Place to build 50,000 to 100,000 recharging and battery-swap stations by 2012; they will be run using renewable energy purchased from the local utility. Various electric-car manufacturers have expressed interest in the plan, and recently Hawaii&#8217;s governor signed a law requiring large parking lots to provide additional space for electric cars by 2011. The state hopes to see 10,000 electric cars on the road by 2014. Experts say Hawaii is an ideal place for them, because travel distances aren&#8217;t very far (usually less than 100 miles). It&#8217;s a series of islands &#8211; eight in all, thank you.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>And most recently, Mikulina &#8211; whose name is familiar to many eco-advocates because of his long career with first the Sierra Club&#8217;s Hawaii Chapter and now with Blue Planet &#8211; points to the <a href=" ttp://blueplanetfoundation.org/bpf-cushy-uploads/media_4_2633025460.pdf" target="_blank">Feed-In Tariff</a>, announced by the state&#8217;s Public Utilities Commission on Sept. 25th that levels the price-point playing field for alt-energy providers, knocking down hurdles for clean-energy development.<strong> (</strong>Essentially a feed-in tariff sets a price that utilities must pay to renewable energy providers, removing uncertainties in the market that hinder development.)</li>
</ul>
<p>So, the groundwork for a clean-energy conversion has be laid, and the sky literally is the limit.</p>

<p>With its sun, wind and surf, Hawaii is ideally positioned for such a sea change. Here, solar energy is a given, wind power a duh, and wave-power possibly just a Hang-Ten away. Not to mention the geo-thermal power contained in all that volcanic activity. In fact, with policy wonks, techno geeks and eco-interests all looking toward the same goal, the Aloha State is poised to become a global force in sustainability, exporting know-how and technology instead of importing fuel and food.</p>
<p>Blue Planet Foundation&#8217;s Mikulina and Rogers believe Hawaii can be energy-independent within a decade.</p>
<p>But what, more specifically, makes Hawaii a mecca for alt-fuel seekers while simultaneously making it vulnerable to fossil-fuel peddlers?</p>
<p>&#8220;First of all, there&#8217;s the geographic isolation of the island,&#8221; says Kimura. &#8220;We&#8217;re one of the most, if not the most, isolated locations in the world. We&#8217;re literally in the middle of the Pacific Ocean &#8211; 2,500 miles from LA and 4,000 miles from Asia in general&#8230; It&#8217;s not like it&#8217;s convenient to get here (ditto for imported foods and fuels). &#8230; We import I&#8217;d say 50 to 60 percent of our food, and as a result of that &#8211; and importing oil &#8211; we export $7 billion of our capital. We spend $7 billion annually for that energy. When you take all of those factors together, the fact is that we have no economic security, and Hawaii needs to move toward an oil-independent, clean energy/fossil-free future. &#8230; Also, take into account that the economy here is largely tourist based, and the cost of living is almost two times higher than in  just about every major city in the United States.&#8221;</p>
<p>The flip-side, Kimura says, looks better.  &#8220;I see two opportunities here. First of all, the opportunity for us to be self-sustaining. We have some of the best wind, some of the best solar, some of the best access to the ocean and to waste-biomass because of our agriculture industry. &#8230; All these are natural resources that could be converted into power, or even just fuel for our cars, like biodiesel. I think that&#8217;s step one &#8212; becoming energy efficient. Step two is exporting our knowledge and our technology. &#8230; It might not be mission-critical for others today, but it will be. These problems are magnified in Hawaii, but they become a reality within ten years in other parts of the world. That second point could become a key economic driver for Hawaii.&#8221;</p>
<p>All across O&#8217;ahu are impressive indicators for the future.</p>
<p>Hickam Air Force Base has a hydrogen fueling station where many of its vehicles &#8211; electric-drive vehicles, be they fuel-cell or internal-combustion that burn hydrogen &#8211; can fill &#8216;er up. That was built about three years ago. Now the station is powered by 146 kilowatts of solar power &#8211; enough to energize about 30 homes. The 180-watt panels were manufactured and installed by Honolulu based Sunetric. The hydrogen plant itself was a joint venture between the state of Hawaii and the United States Air Force.</p>
<p>Nearer to Waikiki, the historic Punahou School, where President Barack Obama graduated high school, class of &#8216;79, has green shoots sprouting every which way. The circa-1841 campus is home to one of the most aggressive pushes toward sustainability of any school in the nation. Across 76 acres, 44 school buildings are spread, many with solar panels and other signs of sustainability. But since 2004, Punahou has taken greenness to a whole new level, with the opening of the LEED Gold Case Middle School in 2004-2005, and, now with construction underway on the uber-clean Omidyar K-1 Neighborhood and Tennis Complex, which Punahou hopes will receive LEED Platinum upon its completion in 2010-2011.</p>
<p>In 2006, Punahou&#8217;s Case Middle School was named &#8220;Greenest School in America&#8221; by the GreenGuide. It features waterless urinals, photovoltaic arrays, as well as curricula and field-trips that focus on all elements of sustainability, from eating local food to being socially responsible and community driven, to being environmentally active. Oh, and the vending machines don&#8217;t have candy.</p>
<p>Over at Sopogy, the company is, to use surfer lingo, throwin&#8217; some serious heat.</p>

<p>Founded by Kimura in 2002 (one of several clean-energy/eco-friendly companies he&#8217;s pioneered over the past 17 years), Sopogy introduced a new product yesterday at the Solar Power International Conference and Expo in Anaheim, Calif. &#8211; the first commercially available rooftop Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) collector &#8211; called the SopoFlare.<strong> </strong>CSP&#8217;s have previously been designed for deserts, or spread across acres and large fields.</p>
<p>&#8220;These are about 30 percent cheaper than traditional solar collectors. And the cool thing is that when we launched the product, we had so many hits on our website that it went down. It&#8217;s back up now. But people were freaking out!&#8221; Kimura said.</p>
<p>But that&#8217;s only the beginning, local entrepreneurs say. A number of new projects are coming online &#8211; have actually been announced &#8211; that amount to almost a billion dollars worth of clean-energy projects in Hawaii. They span the universe of clean energy, from activated carbon to burning sugarcane to create power, to biodiesel projects to Sopogy&#8217;s own steam-energy advances, which use mirrors to intensify the energy of the sun, creating steam and then collecting it.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.stericycle.com/">Stericycle, Inc.</a> has taken up the cause of helping hospitals reduce the amount of waste going into landfills. The Illinois-based company just launched its <a href="http://www.stericycle.com/carbon-footprint-estimator.html">Carbon Footprint Estimator</a>, a tool that allows a hospital to calculate its environmental impact.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.stericycle.com/">Stericycle, Inc.</a>, reports that its own green contribution is helping  hospitals reduce on packaging with the company&#8217;s <a href="http://www.stericycle.com/sharps-disposal.html"> Bio Systems reusable sharps containers</a>. These plastic storage bins for medical waste, such as needles, can be cleaned, disinfected and re-used.</p>
<p>When compared with cardboard alternatives, one reusable container has the life-span equal to 600 disposable containers, according to Kellee Johnson with The Ballast Group.</p>
<p>“To date [since 1986], Stericycle&#8217;s reusable &#8220;sharps program&#8221; has kept more than 72 million disposable containers out of landfills, while preventing 123 million pounds of carbon from being expelled into the atmosphere and 6.3 million gallons of gas from being burned; the equivalent of a 25-mpg car driving around the Earth ten times,” says Stericycle’s website.</p>
<p>Stericycle also properly disposes of prescriptions for doctors. This type of system keeps hazardous waste out of area lakes and streams.</p>

Not only do these shoes not easily break down, the glue that holds a shoe together is toxic. So instead of adding to the growing trash problem, give your shoes a new life. What’s old to you, could be a playground for someone else thanks to Nike.</p>
<p><a href="http://nikereuseashoe.com/">Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe</a> program, in partnership with the <a href="http://www.nrc-recycle.org/">National Recycling Coalition</a>, takes used athletic shoes and transforms them into something new.  The program, which began in 1990, has collected and recycled over 24 million pairs of shoes. Old athletic shoes are converted into Nike Grind, material that is then used to make:</p>
<ul>
<li>Athletic facilities: tracks, basketball and tennis courts, playgrounds, and turf for soccer and football fields</li>
<li>Clothing accessories: zipper pulls, snaps and buttons</li>
<li>Shoes: Air Jordan XX3, Nike Trash Talk, Tiempo Super Ligera Soccer Shoe</li>
</ul>
<p>With grinding facilities in Wilsonville, Ore., and Meerhout, Belgium, donated shoes are broken down into three parts:<img class="alignright size-full wp-image-5706" style="margin: 2px 4px;" title="NikeGrindXsect" src="http://www.greenrightnow.com/wp-content/uploads/NikeGrindXsect.jpg" alt="NikeGrindXsect" width="200" height="133" /></p>
<ul>
<li>Nike Grind Rubber, made from the shoe&#8217;s outsole, is used in track surfaces, interlocking gym flooring tiles, playground surfacing and consumer products, such as new footwear outsoles and trim items like buttons and zipper pulls.</li>
<li>Nike Grind Foam, made from the shoe&#8217;s midsole, is used as a cushion for outdoor basketball and tennis courts, as well as futsal fields.</li>
<li>Nike Grind Upper, made from the shoe&#8217;s fabric upper, is used in the creation of cushioning pads for indoor basketball, volleyball courts and equestrian surfacing products.</li>
</ul>
<p>Nike’s Belgium distribution center runs completely on wind power. “The facility produces enough power not only to provide energy for the distribution center but also puts energy back into the grid for the community to use,” said Kate Meyers with Nike.</p>
<p>Nike accepts any brand athletic shoe, no matter how worn out, excluding only cleats and spikes. There are over 300 drop off locations nationwide at Nike stores, and if there is not one <a href="http://nikereuseashoe.com/get-involved/individual-shoe-recycling">near you</a>, you can mail your shoes directly to Nike’s distribution facility. Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe also reaches Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.</p>
<p>Nike has been doing well by the environment for quite a while now. “We take our commitment to the environment very seriously.  We were the first US company to join the World Wildlife Fund’s Climate Savers Program where we have reduced our CO2 emissions&#8211; 18 percent over what it was 10 years ago,” said Meyers.</p>
<p><img class="size-full wp-image-5705 alignleft" style="margin: 2px 4px;" title="soles4souls" src="http://www.greenrightnow.com/wp-content/uploads/soles4souls.jpg" alt="soles4souls" width="149" height="192" />But, if your shoes are not totally worn out, there is another option. Just because you don’t think your shoes are trendy anymore, doesn’t mean someone else wouldn’t wear them. If your shoes are wearable, there are great charities that you can donate your shoes to such as <a href="http://www.soles4souls.org/index.html">Soles4Souls</a>. This organization that is “Changing the World One Pair at a Time” gives gently worn shoes to people in need.</p>
<p>“There are an estimated 1.52 billion pairs in American closets that are no longer being worn,” stated Elizabeth Kirk, Public Relations and Marketing for Soles4Souls, Inc. Soles4Souls has distributed over four million pairs of shoes in 125 countries. They accept ALL types of shoes, even a single shoe will taken.  Soles4Souls gives you an opportunity to do good for the environment and for those less fortunate all at the same time.</p>
<p>Check <a href="http://www.soles4souls.org/about/locations.cgi">here</a> for a drop off location near you. “We have anywhere from 1,500 to 3,000 retail locations that are currently collecting shoes.  We ask that the public clean out their closet, take their shoes to one of these participation locations and in most cases receive a discount on a new pair,” said Kirk.</p>

<li> Kohler, of Kohler, Wisc., was named &#8220;Manufacturer of the Year&#8221; for earning the WaterSense label for 40 percent of the faucets it produces and 25 percent of its toilets. Like the EPA’s EnergyStar program that recognizes light bulbs and appliances that go easy on electricity, the WaterSense program labels products so consumers can select those that conserve water.</li>

<li>Lowe’s was named Retailer of the Year by the program for training more than 200,000 employees to promote WaterSense products and  increasing the percentage of WaterSense labeled products in its inventory.</li>
</ul>
<p>The EPA estimates that its 1,000-plus WaterSense partners helped Americans save more than 9.3 billion gallons of water in 2008.</p>
<p>The James City Service Authority in Williamsburg, Va., also was recognized for promoting water conservation, and Brian Vinchesi of Mooresvile, N.C., was named “Irrigation Partner of the Year.”</p>
<p>The EPA urges everyone to think about conserving water.</p>
<p>&#8220;Water shortage is a growing concern in the United States. By making just a few simple changes, you can not only save hundreds of dollars for yourself, but trillions of gallons of water and billions of dollars for the country,&#8221; says Virginia Lee of the WaterSense program.</p>

<p>Kimberly-Clark Professional, a division of the paper products company serving commercial and institutional facilities, said today it is launching an awareness campaign that encourages industry professionals to go beyond recycling and think about reducing what they use in the first place.</p>
<p>The company said the campaign called <a href="http://www.kcpReduceToday.com" target="_blank">&#8220;Reduce Today, Respect Tomorrow&#8221;</a> will be its first environmentally focused, global communications effort.</p>
<p>One of four global business sectors within Kimberly-Clark Corp., Kimberly-Clark Professional is among the world&#8217;s largest manufacturers of washroom products, serving office buildings, hotels, schools, health-care facilities, manufacturing plants and other public buildings.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our ongoing efforts to achieve outstanding environmental performance are not just our responsibility as corporate citizens, they are vital to our success as a business,&#8221; Jan Spencer, president of Global Kimberly-Clark Professional, said in a statement. &#8220;These efforts are also guided by global, company-wide objectives for improving operational performance in energy, water, waste, and environmental management systems.&#8221;</p>
<p>The company said that while many regard recycled fiber content as the main measure of environmental stewardship, Kimberly-Clark Professional wants to reduce environmental impact at every stage of a product&#8217;s lifecycle. K-C said that by practicing &#8220;source reduction&#8221; it can essentially prevent waste before it is ever created. If less is consumed in the first place, it often means there is less packaging waste, which further reduces the amount of waste to recycle, or send to landfills.</p>
<p>Kimberly-Clark Professional said it has implemented other practices to reduce the environmental impact of products, including:</p>
<ul>
<li>Developing unique fiber-efficient technologies, such as the patented UCTAD manufacturing process, which reduces by up to 17 percent the amount of fiber needed to make tissue, towel and wiper products versus competitive wet press technology.</li>
<li>Compressing or redesigning products and packaging so that more fits into every case.</li>
<li>Introducing products such as Scott Coreless Standard Roll Bath Tissue, which reduces packaging waste by nearly 55 percent, compared with standard roll bath tissue &#8212; including 100 percent core and paper wrap elimination.</li>
<li>Resizing cases to optimize how they fit onto standard pallets, so truck space can be used more effectively, reducing the total number of deliveries needed to fill orders.</li>
