Live by The Law of Abundance

January 21st, 2009 · No Comments

Saving the World at Work

Our efforts to make a difference are under fire from the forces of scarcity. So, I’ve decided to post a very timely excerpt from my new book.

An excerpt from Saving The World At Work by Tim Sanders:

The Law of Abundance essentially states that there is always enough to go around. There are enough customers, enough talented people, enough recognition, enough of whatever is needed. Based on his research into personal effectiveness, bestselling author Dr. Stephen Covey suggests that we would all be more effective if we developed the abundance mentality: “It opens possibilities, alternatives, and creativity.”

Saving the World at Work
Of all industries, the home building business is ripe with false claims of being green.
On Monday, reporter Lew Sichelman wrote a wonderful piece about this recent phenom, and along the way, gives a great lesson on what Greenwashing is — and how to spot it in advertising claims.

Let’s go from Green to Blue

January 12th, 2009 · No Comments

Saving the World at Work

I am a huge fan of Adam Werbach (former President of the Sierra Club). Back in 2004 he declared that “environmentalism is dead” and in 2006 he went to work for Wal-Mart. Crazy guy? Not loyal? Hardly. He’s a rock star in my book (literally).

In April of 2008, Werbach gave a very important talk at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco. The content of the talk is aligned with my thinking. He believes (as I do) that we have to go beyond saving the planet to focusing on humans (as the planet will likely go on without us).

Daily Catch: One film producer goes green

January 7th, 2009 · No Comments

Saving the World at Work

Today’s daily catch comes from a thoughtful post by John Livesay over at Saving The World.

He points out how Focus Features has a film in production that is greening up the process in every way possible. I’ve heard of green band productions, such as Radiohead or Dave Mathews, but this is a first for me in the film biz.

Away We Go Green: Focus Features Production Embraces More Sustainable Filmmaking

If you are not injecting this type of innovation (thoughtfullness) into your business, what’s your excuse?

Daily catch: The first eco-cell phone!

January 6th, 2009 · No Comments

By Tim Sanders
Saving the World at Work

Today’s great catch is fresh from the Consumer Electronics Show:
Moto Goes Green With Entry Level Renew Phone

It’s about time! Up until now, you had to donate your phone via mailing it to a variety of causes (such as phones for soldiers). The rub is that eventually that phone is likely to end up in a drawer, and later a landfill.

This is another innovation on the path to a closed loop system of production. Let’s hope that all phones can be data deleted and recycled someday when they’ve served their useful life.

Launch a last minute make-a-difference drive at work

December 22nd, 2008 · No Comments

By Tim Sanders
Saving the World at Work

At work, one person can unleash the power of many.
Take toy drives for local charities: By yourself, you can fill up a trunk. Take your cause to work and you’ll fill up a truck.
I was in Palo Alto on Weds to give a talk at Facebook. Several of the Facebookers were previous colleagues of mine at Yahoo!. One of them, Dustin, showed me a pile of toys he’s collected at work for a local kid’s charity. It was an impressive pile for his medium sized sales office.
Not only was he making a difference, he was lifting his own holiday spirit.

The fallacy of Gone Green

Over and over again, I see marketing announcements by companies that claim that they’ve “gone green!”

How did they do it? They’ve made their business “a little less bad.” If they make cars, they increased fuel efficiency by 20%, so now their SUV is green. (At 19 miles per gallon, that is a laugher). They’ve replaced the ink in their labels with soy, so now they are green. (Again, why haven’t they replaced virgin paper in packaging or eliminated air shipping of the product?)

Are layoffs socially responsible?

December 11th, 2008 · No Comments

By Tim Sanders
Saving the World at Work

How many layoffs has Southwest Airlines had? Zero.

How many for SAS Institute. Same number.

Why? Both founders/CEOs are willing to do ANYTHING to avoid them. They don’t see layoffs as a natural response to economic downturns, usually taken to please value investors on Wall Street. Southwest was a market rebel and SAS Institute stayed private.

In my view, socially responsible companies don’t have layoffs when they are still viable or making money. It is not an expense reduction strategy with an upside. I’m not alone in this view. Last week, Barry Diller went on record saying that layoffs are a horrible thing to do to people and society when your company is not at risk of bankruptcy. For once, I totally agree with him.

Check out this video interview: Mass layoffs by profitable firms a horrible act.

It starts with certification!

December 9th, 2008 · No Comments

By Tim Sanders
Saving the World at Work

In LA, your business will soon be able to apply for “Green Business Certification.”

Read today’s story: City Of Los Angeles To Certify Green Businesses

Why is this important? Once a system is setup to recognize business practices as green, then a credible instrument exists to differentiate one company from another in a competitive situation.

If two companies are competing for business, let the certified green one win.

Same goes when the two companies compete for talent in the future.

Without certification, it’s all about marketing — which leads to greenwashing. We’ve learned that Fair Trade certification is an important infrastructure to fair trade’s value proposition to all parties. So I’m really hopeful that this program works well over the next few years. If your town doesn’t offer this, raise your voice!
