For more information on threatened or endangered species, see Audubon’s 2007 Watch List, which is divided by bird types, such as songbirds, jeopardized by the overall loss of habitat and in particular by deforestation in their Northern nesting grounds.
Audubon also publishes a list of Common Birds in Decline, demonstrating that it’s not just the rare and occasional bird species that’s afflicted by human “progress.”
“Birds that rely on virtually every kind of habitat found in the U.S. are found on WatchList,’’ according to Audubon. “Global warming threatens feeding grounds for seabirds like Xantus’ Murrelet and breeding grounds for songbirds like the Saltmarsh Sharp-tailed Sparrow. Drought is having devastating consequences for grassland birds like Gunnison’s Sage-Grouse and the Lesser Prairie-Chicken…. Meanwhile, coastal development, industrialized farming practices, pollution, energy development and suburban sprawl are eliminating and degrading the places many of these species need to feed, rest and breed.”
“Concerned people” can help save birds, however, by reporting their observations for the annual Christmas Bird Count starting on December 14 and running until Jan. 5, 2008, and by taking other actions, like creating a bird-friendly backyard habitat and stopping the use of pesticides at home and in their communities.
Bird is available at many retail outlets, including Barnes & Noble and Amazon. It retails for $50 in the USA and $60 in Canada and comes with an audio CD. (The audio is crisp and charming, but we were hoping for a photo CD.)
