Vatican Declares Pollution A Sin

Thank God. It’s now officially wrong to pollute the environment. In fact, according to the Vatican, which came out with seven new categories of moral turpitude related to the “phenomenon of globalization,” it is a sin.

Bishop Gianfranco Girotti articulated these new violations related to modern times and our global social relations in the Vatican’s newspaper, L’Osservatore Romano, saying that people can “offend God” by “wrecking the environment,” manipulating DNA and harming embryos. Bloomberg News boiled down the new seven sins thusly:

1. “Bioethical” violations such as birth control
2. “Morally dubious” experiments such as stem cell research
3. Drug abuse
4. Polluting the environment
5. Contributing to widening divide between rich and poor
6. Excessive wealth
7. Creating poverty

No surprise that the bioethical violations topped the list. This is a clear Catholic agenda. But coming in number 4 was a pretty good score for Mother Earth. Obviously the original “seven deadly sins” – pride, envy, gluttony, lust, anger, greed and sloth – still stand.
