Operating a push mower for 30 minutes burns 243 calories for a 180-pound person, according to the National Gardening Association. Raking and bagging leaves (each for 30 minutes) burns 325 calories, according to NGA.
Feeling lazy, too busy, or all of the above? Clean Air Lawn Care is Colorado-based, but now operates in several U.S. cities. It’s one of the growing numbers of lawn care companies committed to greener practices. And their prices are competitive, said Peter “Mac” McGoldrick, program manager for the Engines and Energy Conversion Laboratory/Global Innovation Center at Colorado State University in Fort Collins.
It made sense for the Center, which is committed to the development of technology that reduces air pollution impact, to use a lawn care service devoted to the same goals as EECL. The lab is surrounded by grounds equivalent to two city blocks, McGoldrick said.
Sarah Trelstad of Portland turned to Clean Air Lawn Care to feel better about the environment she and her husband were providing for their two young children.
I’ve been reading about global warming and becoming a little bit more concerned about the environment,” Trelstad said.
“Some of these (problems) are so big, and I just thought it would be a really simple way to help the environment, to keep our neighborhoods quiet and clean. And it makes me feel better about having my kids out on the lawn,” she added.
Trelstad has watched as other neighbors have connected with the Clean Air Lawn Care, which uses electric and bio-diesel fueled equipment. Trucks outfitted with solar panels provide power to the electric equipment during the day.
