Green By Degrees: More Colleges Offering Sustainability Programs

August 15th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Michigan State University

Michigan State University is a two-time winner of the AASHE Campus Sustainability Award.

The university features an Enviornmental Science and Policy Program that includes both graduate and undergraduate initiatives. Established in 2003, the program offers a Doctorial Specialization in Enviornmental Science and Policy. The specialization offers a sequence of four courses designed to show how different disciplines conceptualize environmental issues.

Two specializations are also offered for undergraduates-one dealing with the sustainable agriculture and food systems and the other with sustainability more broadly.

Collaboration is key, according to Michigan State representatives. The students and faculty have worked together to achieve:

  • A Student Organic Farm (SOF) that continues to expand. Most recently, the SOF has added beekeeping and chickens in addition to various fruits and vegetables. The SOF also offers an “organic farm certificate program.
  • A full-time bike center established in 2006. The Michigan State Bike Project has leased hundreds of bikes to students and faculty, while also making repairs.

Michigan State also maintains the lowest electrical consumption among Big Ten universities.
