LUSH Cosmetics, a natural bath and body shop, hopes to hit consumers with the naked truth about Canada’s destructive tar sands projects. Starting tomorrow, it will launch a campaign against the tar sands, with a petition and a specially designated product to help raise money to fight what it sees as an environmental catastrophe.

Store employees in the Los Angeles shop will kick off the two week effort by wearing nothing but oil barrels emblazoned with the slogan ‘Time For An Oil Change or We’ll Lose it All!”

The shop staff will be asking passersby and customers to sign postcards asking President Obama to fund green, renewable energy and stop the tar sands project, which is gearing up largely to serve the U.S. oil market. The Canadian tar sands are found in central Canada where strip mining methods are used to extract oil from the sands. The process is labor-, energy- and water-intensive and destroys vast acreages of land.

“We are gravely concerned that the world is running out of oil and, in a desperate attempt to secure the last of the world’s remaining oil, the American government is turning to a toxic source of oil called the Canadian Tar Sands,’’ according to a statement on the project by LUSH.

“This sludge-like substance is very difficult to turn into oil and produces three times more greenhouse gas emissions than conventional oil. It requires ancient Canadian forests to be cut down, open pit mining and the boiling of truckloads of fresh water mixed with earth just to make one barrel of oil. The result is poisoned water, polluted air and accelerated climate change.”

To support its campaign against the dirty tar sands project, LUSH will be selling one item, a Wild Rose Country bath bomb ($5.95) and devoting 100 percent of its proceeds to the campaign against the tar sands spearheaded by the Rainforest Action Network.

It selected this product as the symbol for the campaign because the wild rose is the provincial flower of Alberta, where many of the tar sands mines are located.

The Wild Rose bath bomb, scented with bergamot oil and rose absolute, will be available exclusively during the two weeks of the campaign.

According to the Rainforest Action Network (RAN), producing a barrel of oil from the tar sands produces three times more greenhouse gas emissions than a barrel of conventional oil. If extraction proceeds, it could result in the loss of 65,000 square kilometers of forest. In addition, each barrel of oil produced from the tar sands uses 2.5 to 4 barrels of water for each barrel of oil produced; water that ends up in toxic containment ponds that leach contaminated water into the environment.
