Coca-Cola goes sweet for Passover — and also for the planet

Coca-Cola company announced it will be observing Earth Hour tomorrow by turning out some iconic lighted signs in cities around the world, including those in Times Square in New York, Piccadilly Circus in London, San Pedro Sula in Honduras and Kings Cross in Sydney.

The global soft drink maker also will darken corporate offices in Atlanta to observe Earth Hour on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. local time. Hundreds of countries, thousands of cities and many other corporate entities will be turning out the lights for one hour, supporting of the symbolic show of unity against climate change.

Unintentionally, Coca-Cola also took another Earth-friendly step this month, issuing a kosher version of Coke for Passover that is made with sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup.

Businesses say climate change ‘delay is not an option’

While environmental activists raise banners and bullhorns demanding action on climate change, the movement to quell climate change has quieter advocates in all corners of society.

CopCommuniqueSome of these advocates have big names Americans will surely recognize: Addidas, Coca-Cola Company, L’Oreal, Procter & Gamble, Johnson and Johnson, Chevron Ltd., Alcoa Alumnio, Ericsson, Nike Inc., General Electric, Levi Strauss, KPMG International, Gap Inc., Fairmont Hotels and Resorts, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, Starbucks and Yahoo! Inc..

These are not companies that one normally associates with strong environmentalism, and some have carbon footprints that scare the bejesus out of environmental groups. (Though a closer look would reveal that many also have significant green initiatives underway. Fairmont has built green hotels. General Electric is invested in green energy.)

Coca-Cola takes a step toward environmentalists on BPA use

Coca-Cola is getting kudos from environmentalists for meeting them half way on the subject of BPA, bisphenol-A, a toxic chemical used in food packaging.

On May 28 of this year, lobbyists from the chemical industry and food companies gathered at the Cosmos Club in Washington, D.C. According to the Environmental Working Group, a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting public health and the environment, the focus of the meeting was to white-wash the risks of BPA.

Chicago joins RecycleBank program to increase recycling rates

The City of Chicago says it will launch a partnership with RecycleBank, a rewards program that rewards households for recycling and other positive environmental behaviors. The program is designed to increase recycling participation and complement the city’s transition to the Blue Cart Program that is now in place in more than 241,000 households in Chicago.

RecycleBank projects the city will see about 600 tons of waste diversion and over $500,000 in local economic stimulus as a result of an initial six month field test program.
