Nothing quite says “soaring electricity bill” like the sound of the AC kicking on as you wake-up, heralding another broiling summer day.
Whether you’re suffering in the usual seasonal heat of the Southwest, or simmering in the extraordinary heat wave cooking the mid-section of the nation, it’s likely the AC is running 24/7 now as record daytime heat overwhelms night time cool temperatures no longer worthy of that adjective.

Back from vacation, where we witnessed the slow-motion disaster of the Missouri River flood, we find ourselves settling into a summer sauna that is just a little beyond typical, even for Texas.
Nearly the entire state is suffering from either drought, protracted excessive heat or both.
The extreme temperatures began in June, sweeping across the South, from Arizona to Florida, and threaten to continue through August. Starting late last week, the heat wave spread across the Midwest, singeing Northern cities like Chicago and Minneapolis (which sampled 103 in June) unaccustomed to triple digits.

July 2010 was the second hottest July in the 32-year history of charting temperatures by satellite, according to preliminary records kept by the Earth System Science Center at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.
The global average temperature was only 0.03 C cooler than the record set in July 1998, said Dr. John Christy, professor of atmospheric science and director of the Earth System Science Center
