Coming clean: Here are the top energy-efficient washing machines

September 24th, 2010

The Frigidaire Affinity model FAFS4474 is the second most efficient washer on the market today, based on Energy Star ratings.

Next on the Energy Star guide are two Frigidaire models with high efficiency ratings, part of its FAF4474 series. That is Frigidaire’s Affinity, a front-loading machine with a 4.4 cubic foot capacity and lots of special features, including steam, gentler and specialty cycles, vibration control and a Stay Fresh door seal (a common complaint about front-loading washing machines is mildew developing in the door). The Affinity’s suggested retail price is $1,149.

Ninth on the list as most energy efficient is the LG model WM3360H. Unfortunately, we could not find any model numbers closely matching that from LG washers on the market now.

Two Frigidaire models come next, but we couldn’t find model LAFW7000. Next is another version of the Affinity, FAFS4272, slightly smaller at 4.2 cubic feet, according to the Frigidaire website.  It also features steam, vibration and noise controls, door seal protectants and an “energy saver” option that the company says will further reduce energy use up to 60 percent. It’s a little less expensive at $950.
