Turn out the lights: Earth Hour 2010 is coming

Ready to spend a little time in the dark to show that you aren’t in the dark about climate change? Earth Hour 2010 is just around the corner.

The event – organized by the World Wildlife Fund and scheduled for 8:30 p.m. local time on Saturday, March 27 – once again will feature millions of Americans turning out their lights for one hour in support of action on climate change. In 2009, an estimated 80 million people in the U.S. and nearly a billion around the world participated on some level, resulting in the lights going dim at such iconic venues as the Eiffel Tower in Paris, New York’s Empire State Building, the Sydney Opera House and the Great Pyramids of Gaza.

Through the dark, enlightenment

The darkness looms. Earth Hour is just a day away, so get ready to observe the biggest one yet, along with more than 2,600 cities across the globe in more than 80 countries.

Hold your own black out at 8:30 p.m. (in your time zone) on Saturday at home or in your ‘hood and you’ll be simpatico with people in Egypt where they’re turning out the lights on the Sphinx, Paris where the Eiffel Tower will go dark and NYC where Broadway marquees will blink out at the appropriate time. (Not to mention the Las Vegas strip, the Sears Tower in Chicago, the St. Louis Arch, the Golden Gate Bridge, those giant Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur. You get the picture.)

Closing in on Earth Hour 2009

With Earth Hour just days away, the final details are falling into place for the global event that focuses attention on the call for action on climate change. The Earth Hour organization says the Acropolis in Athens and the Sphinx and Great Pyramids of Giza are the latest world landmarks that will join in going dark.

Earth Hour 2009, coming to a city near you this spring

Earth Hour, that annual blackout to demonstrate support for fighting global warming, will be back stronger than ever in 2009. Organizers announced Thursday that 377 cities in 74 countries have pledged to participate in the global event set for March 28 at 8:30 p.m. (your time), surpassing last year’s participation.
