The University of Kansas, the city of Lawrence, and ESPN are teaming up to showcase the school’s sustainability efforts. On December 19, 2009, the Kansas men’s basketball team will host Michigan at Allen Fieldhouse for a “Green Game”, which will showcase the crimson & blue’s environmental efforts not only within athletics, but the campus as a whole.
Along with a student produced recycling video, ESPN has produced two videos that will highlight two key sustainability initiatives taking place at the University of Kansas. The first will show
the school’s recreation and fitness center, which uses the kinetic energy from 15 exercise machines and then feeds it pack into the building’s electrical grid.

Emory University is home to more than 12,000 undergrad and graduate students and is deeply invested in the green revolution. They are preserving green space, engaging freshmen, raising dining awareness and promoting personal responsibility. The Atlanta school, known for having President Jimmy Carter among the faculty, covers more than 600 acres — more than half of which protected from development by the university’s sustainability plan.
Emory University held their first green new student orientation last month. In addition to handing out reusable totes, which is becoming a trend at colleges, Emory gave out energy-saving compact fluorescent light bulbs that students can use in desk lamps in their residence halls.

One of the nation’s leading environmental organizations, The Sierra Club, released their Third Annual Sierra Cool Schools list in the September/October issue of The Sierra Magazine.
The 135 schools were graded on a 100 point scale, and given final grades of A+ to F. There were eight categories that were taken into account:

The University of California at San Diego is, in no way, new to the green movement. Each year they find new ways to become more eco-friendly. They give all incoming freshmen water bottles that can be filled at free filtered “hydration stations” around campus. Reusable recycling bags are given to every room in their transfer housing. University restaurants and markets use fair trade and locally grown organic foods, as well as cage-free eggs. They’ve also eliminated take-away plastics and Styrofoam. That’s a pretty impressive green resume.
But perhaps the most interesting thing though this year is their development of “EcoNauts”. When school starts later this month, there will be a few new environmental employees.
