Federal weatherization funds providing major boost to states

Pennsylvania Gov. Edward G. Rendell announced today that the first installment of $123 million in federal Recovery funds for weatherization will begin to be released Nov. 2, part of $253 million that the state will use for this purpose.

The Governor said the funding represents an unprecedented level of investment that will help to create new, “green” jobs, save money for struggling families, and stimulate local economic activity as weatherization agencies buy required material, vehicles and equipment.

Grant will connect NYC’s low income workers to green jobs

Seedco announced today it has received a $500,000 grant from the Starr International Foundation in Switzerland to launch an effort to help New York City’s low-income workers train for and connect to jobs in the emerging building energy retrofit industry.

An organization focused on initiatives that help low-income people, Seedco also will create opportunities for small businesses to enter and expand into the energy retrofit field. In the coming years, the industry is expected to expand as a result of government-regulated efficiency mandates and demand for energy efficiency buildings.

Stimulus plan puts green into green; the details so far…

In a alert released this afternoon, entitled “Congress Gets It Right — Recovery Deal to Spur Clean Energy Economy”, the Natural Resources Defense Council praised the compromise stimulus package hammered out by Congress for the ways it steers the American economy in a greener direction.

“Congress really got it right with this economic recovery package that will deliver jobs and green infrastructure to America. The bill makes smart investments that will jumpstart the economy, help sustain future growth, and meet the challenges of the 21st century,”effused Wesley Warren, director of programs for the NRDC. “We need to put America on a path to a clean-energy economy, and Congress has taken a big step forward in heeding this call.
