Check your sprinkler system frequently and adjust sprinklers so only your lawn is watered and not the house, sidewalk, or street. Minimize evaporation by watering during the early morning hours, when temperatures are cooler and winds are lighter.

Oceans of garbage: Reaping what we throw

This graphic posted by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) on its Switchboard blog captures so much of what we already know…that we’re polluting the oceans, killing fish with plastic, creating gargantuan gyres of junk. But it brings it home in a clear and meaningful way, specifically following our trail of misdeeds back to our own dinner plate.

Kudos to the student creators at MastersDegree.net who came up with the idea that the best messages are those that involve our tummies. As the NRDC’s Francesca Koe notes, they’ve taken that old adage “you are what you eat” and shown how it’s coming back to bite us in “a very unappetizing way.
