The college of veterinary nutrition lists two websites that consumers (and vets) can turn to for good homemade dog food recipes created specifically for your dog. This, however, costs money.
At Balance IT, veterinary nutritionists have created software that allows them to provide recipes tailored to your dog. You must pay for each recipe ($20 for one recipe, $12.50 each for 3 or more recipes), as the site says, because you are asking for a formulation created by an expert (via their proprietary software). If you asked for something similar from a vet nutritionist, it would cost anywhere from $140 to $250. Balance IT also sells specifically formulated supplements for homemade dog food.
Another recommended website for professionally formulated home made doggie food is PetDiets.com. It’s run by an independent professional consulting group for veterinarians and regular folks. The site leads you through a process of developing a recipe exclusively for your dog, but also at a cost. The first recipe is $25, any extras are $12 each. The site also offers personalized nutrition consultations through your veterinarian. Those, also, are not free.
Questions? They likely have answers.
At PetEducation.com, there are lots of tips and advice on homemade natural food. The Humane Society has a page of foods and other items that can be dangerous to your pets. (Grapes, raisins, cherry pits, apple seeds, rhubarb and tomato leaves, walnuts, tea and coffee grounds, and more.)
Bottom line: Making homemade organic dog food takes time, and costs money if done correctly. It may be advisable for dogs with particular health issues, but a healthy dog will likely get little more benefit from it than from a high-quality commercially made organic food.
Your vet can likely guide you in how to read ingredient lists for healthy essentials, or even steer you toward reputable natural dog food manufacturers, Hill said.
That said, if you take the time and effort to do it right, you’ll likely see a big smile on that doggie face and can rest assured the whole family is eating right.
