President Obama is facing significant opposition to the 1,700 mile Keystone XL pipeline, which protesters say would jeopardize the nation’s largest aquifer, the Ogalalla Aquifer, and needlessly prolong America’s dependence on fossil fuels.
At the end of the summer, hundreds protested the proposed Canada-to-Houston pipeline outside the White House during two weeks of sidewalk sit-ins. More than 1,200 people were arrested for civil disobedience, including affected landowners and high profile environmental activists like Bill McKibben, NASA’s Dr. James Hansen and actress Daryl Hannah. Leaders delivered a petition to the White House signed by more than 600,000 people opposed to the project.
