Cadmium-telluride solar panels buffeted in the falling solar market

Rob Gillette’s ouster Tuesday as the CEO of First Solar brings to light a potential market problem with the Cadmium Telluride “thin film” solar technology that First Solar relies upon.
CadTel solar panels are considerably less efficient than regular silicon solar panels, but they are cheaper to make.
For many years, CadTel technology appeared to be a worthwhile proposition, because it could offset its lower performance with lower prices that made thin film more marketable. It could break through the price barrier that was holding up solar adoption by utilities and residential consumers.

GE to open biggest US solar factory, creating about 450 jobs in Colorado and New York

GE has released new details of the solar factory it’s opening in Colorado, which is projected to employ 355 people on site with an additional 100 high-tech workers in affiliated positions in upstate New York.

The factory in Aurora, a Denver suburb, will be set up in an existing building capable of producing enough thin-film PV panels annually to power 80,000 homes. It will begin production in 2012, quicker than announced earlier, with the first panels coming off the production line within the year. Employment is targeted to reach capacity over five years.
