The cost of Hurricane Irene will be hefty. It will take $5 billion to $7 billion, by early estimates, to repair roads, haul out downed trees and pump out flooded basements in North Carolina, Virginia, New Jersey, New York, and the hurricane’s surprise last-minute victim, Vermont.
That’s similar to the $5.2 billion price tag placed on the Texas drought this year, which has caused extensive livestock and crop failures in the state, a major producer of beef, corn, cotton and other commodities.

If you’re living in the path of Hurricane Irene, but this is the first major storm to threatens your neighborhood in years, you’ll need to take a deep breath and make sure to be prepared.
It’s important to make those last excursions to the grocery store and gas station count. To be truly prepared, you’ll need to think beyond “bottled water” and make provisions for holding extra water for bathing, for example. You’ll have to make sure the family pooch has a stockpile of food and the car has a full tank of gas.

Hurricane Irene, which has been battering Caribbean islands for days as it heads toward the US, has become so massive, it’s diameter is nearly one-third the size of the Eastern Seaboard, according to NASA.
The space agency released this satellite photo, showing Irene threatening Florida and Tropical Depression 10, forming in the far Eastern Atlantic.
