2011 was officially the 9th warmest year on record

January 25th, 2012

Warmer than average global surface temperatures in 2011 added up to make the year the 9th warmest on record, or since 1880, when modern record-keeping began, according to NASA.

The finding, according to NASA scientists at the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), confirms that the Earth’s temperatures are warming overall, with 9 of the 10 warmest years occurring since 2000. The only 20th Century year in the top ten was 1998. (2005 and 2010 tied for the hottest year(s) on record.)

From Green Right Now Reports

Higher than normal ocean temperatures are wreaking havoc on coral reefs in south east Asia, the Indian Ocean and the Pacific, turning previously color-splashed areas into white wastelands due to a phenomenon known as “coral bleaching.”

“The bleaching is very strong throughout south east Asia and the central Indian Ocean,” Dr. Mark Eakin, coordinator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Coral Reef Watch, said. “The reports are that it is the worst since 1997/1998. This is a really huge event and we are going to see a lot of corals dying.”

Blame it on global warming or just bad luck, but the 2010 Games will get off to a queasy start for hosts and athletes alike. While the East Coast is buried in white stuff, and normally mild North Texas enjoyed a day-long snow on Thursday (ending with a record 11.2 inches recorded at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport), folks in British Columbia were scrambling to make at least one Olympic venue look like a winter wonderland – with mixed success.

NASA cites 2009 as second-warmest year on record

January 26th, 2010

If 2009 left you a little hot under the collar, there was more to that feeling than job losses, bankruptcies, foreclosures, etc.

Turns out it actually was pretty hot out there.

According to NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies, 2009 tied for the second-warmest year on record, trailing only 2005. In the southern hemisphere, ’09 was the warmest year since the inception of record-keeping in 1880.
