Green Grades report gives FedEx Office and Office Depot good marks for paper practices

Just in time for the new school year, an environmental watchdog group has issued a report card on paper retailers with forest-friendly policies.

ForestEthics, a Canadian-US non-profit founded in 2000, and the Dogwood Alliance, a defender of Southern US forests based in Asheville, N.C., collaborated on the third annual Green Grades report, which placed FedEx Office and Office Depot at the top of their class.

FedEx Office received an A- and Office Depot a B. Staples got a B- and Office Max a C in the group’s evaluation of the office retail sector.

Kimberly-Clark will use sustainable paper; in accord with Greenpeace

Kimberly-Clark, the world’s largest personal paper products company, announced new policies today in which the paper maker will greatly increase the use of recycled and sustainably grown wood fibers in its products, which include the Kleenex, Scott and Cottonelle brands.

The move will help save forests around the globe and make the Dallas-based company a leader in producing sustainable paper products, said Greenpeace media officer Daniel Kessler. “We worked with Kimberly-Clark on this policy and it’s a landmark for forest protection; 100 percent of Kimberly-Clark’s fiber will come from sustainable sources.”

Office Depot churns out more green products and a new green website

Office Depot is taking its green commitment to a new level, putting its green buying policies and consumer guides onto a new environmental website to help businesses assess their eco-friendly options, learn why they might want to go green and read about Office Depot’s environmental strategies.

The consumer guides help people learn about certified products like, for instance, Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) paper, which is sourced from sustainable forests specifically managed to regenerate.
