“The California vote changes the picture entirely,” Harnish said. “It’s a project that’s going to move forward, and that’s got to change the game in the Midwest. Currently, Minneapolis is an eight-hour drive from Chicago. With high-speed rail, Minneapolis is two hours and 40 minutes away. What needs to happen is people need to tell their legislators that this is something that’s desperately needed.”
Does Harnish think fast-tracking high-speed rail in the Midwest will have to wait until the economy improves?
“We’ve got severe oil supply issues. The only way to get out of this financial crisis is to reinvent our economy to address the root causes of the problems,” Harnish said. “Getting transit expanded is one of the keys.”
Busalacchi agrees.
“We need to expand the rail system so passenger trains are on time. If you do that, people will ride it.” And that, said Busalacchi, is the key to getting cars off and the country on the road toward energy independence – and a greener tomorrow.
