Deer Hill Expeditions
Location: Basecamp located on a 130-acre plot between Colorado Rockies and Colorado Plateau, and different tours that travel across the American Southwest and to Costa Rica
Camp Type: Wilderness Expedition and Community Service Program
Age group: 7th to 12th grade
Started: 1984
Why we love it: Because a central tenet to all eleven programs is that campers immerse themselves in the native culture of the region. That means you could spend your summer with a small group of no more than a dozen fellow campers building a traditional stone oven with the Hopi tri
be or learning centuries-old sustainable agriculture methods at a Navajo sheep camp. Some Deer Hill programs aid the U.S. Forest Service in the conservation of wilderness lands, and all campers are taught to appreciate the natural world by learning skills of living in the wilderness while leaving a minimum impact.
“We employ ‘leave no trace’ camping principles,” explains Deer Hill’s Richard Malcolm. “Take only pictures, leave only footprints. It’s very important that our campers are learning how to treat nature with respect.”
