Windsor Mountain International
Location: Windsor, New Hampshire
Camp Type: Overnight Camp
Age group: 7 to 14 years old
Started In: 1961
Why we love it: There is an organic garden located in the heart of the camp, and everybody weeds, harvests and cares for the camp’s animals. The meals rely on the locally grown ingredients (so you know the veggies at the salad bar are super fresh) and food waste is weighed and tracked at the end of each meal to prevent wastefulness.
“It’s more fulfilling to take kids with an urban reality and have them spend four weeks with their feet in the grass,” says director Sarah Herman. “It’s giving them a new way of thinking.” Windsor Mountain is all about provoking campers to think about environmental preservation. The camp is full of sustainable projects like building and painting a windmill to harness electricity and building a greenhouse to raise seedlings; and also full of sustainable practices like low-flow fittings in the bathrooms, motion activated lights and green detergents and cleaning supplies.
