Camp Green, learning to cherish the Earth while having a blast

April 9th, 2009

Camp Ocean Pines

Location: Cambria, California, and trip destinations include Morro Bay State Park, Big Sur and Yosemite

Camp Type: Overnight Camp

Age group: 8 to 14 years old

Started In: 1946

Why we love it: Pristine beaches on the California coast. Need we say more? Well, we also love that the ocean-based camp incorporates natural science teachings into its daily activities and for the camp, stressing the importance of preserving nature has become, well, second nature.

“Everything we do is nature-based so obviously we don’t want to pollute what we’re studying,” explains executive director Chris Cameron. “We take care to preserve our campsite and we try to teach the kids that same philosophy.” And Camp Ocean Pines is certainly leading by example. Green efforts include the construction of straw-bale cabins engineered for passive solar efficiency and the employment of hot water on-demand water heaters.
